I checked the specifications on the Acer 9410Z, and verified that it ships with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium.
This is actually a very common problem in Windows Vista and tends to occur for a few different reasons. One notable issue is anti-virus and anti-spyware programs that perform a system scan and remove any instances of viruses and/or malware.
Without going into too much detail there is quick fix available from Microsoft at:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060Scroll down to "Fix it for me", and just click "Fix." This will run a quick installation, and then ask you to restart your computer. If it doesn't ask you, then restart it manually.
Your CD/DVD drive should now show up in My Computer, and should be recognized by all programs.
Hope this helps!

- Regarding the comment about anti-virus/anti-spyware programs:
Programs like Trend-Micro, Kaspersky, and Spysweeper do their job correctly and remove any instances of malware they find, but for some reason this will sometimes remove your CD/DVD drive in Windows Vista. This only seems to occur in Vista as I have seen it a few times. Use the fix I provided to correct this problem.
It could also be a simple case of drive-mapping which you can check my right-clicking "My Computer" and selecting "Manage". Select "Disk Management" on the left pane and you will see all the drives installed on your computer. You will see your hard-drive, your WD external hard-drive, and hopefully your CD/DVD drive. If you see your CD/DVD drive, it may not have a letter associated with it. Simply right-click the CD/DVD drive and select "Change drive letter/path". You can then assign it another letter.
So in summary, check this first.. if you don't have a CD/DVD drive listed in disk management then just run that quick fix I gave you. Running the quick fix first will not damage your computer in any way.
