No CD /DVD Drive Icon

I have an Acer 9410Z Laptop. It’s less than two years old. I have tried to communicate with Acer support ( by e-mail ) but they will not respond.
This model uses the - Optiarc DVD RW AD-7530A ATA.
My DVD/CD drive stopped working. I’ve just now discovered after placing a CD disc in the drive that it spins and then nothing happens.
I clicked start computer and my DVD drive icon was not even listed - as was before.
I have a WD external drive, and after unplugging my USB plug ( after backups) - I often get a message telling me, "it is now safe to unplug my (F:) drive.
My DVD drive was (E:).
And my WD external is usually (F:) ....and still is - even with the (E:) drive icon missing.
That may be because the driver is still there, and I just accidentally erased the picture icon.
I went into my Device Manager, and tried to update my DVD driver, and was told - I have the latest driver.
Apparently, the pop-up message might have said: "it is now safe to remove the (E:) drive that I didn’t read it carefully. I must have deleted my DVD drive pictures icon by accident.
Also, when I start my applicable programs - such as NTI CD&DVD Maker, it states;
...."No supported drive detected."
Gee! ...I can’t even installed my new programs.
It was working well just a few days ago, and it has always shown in my computer dialog.
I am assuming that I erased the icon picture - but not the driver. Can’t be sure. The driver may be defective.
Can someone please tell me exactly how to make it work again?
Thanks a million times.

I checked the specifications on the Acer 9410Z, and verified that it ships with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium.

This is actually a very common problem in Windows Vista and tends to occur for a few different reasons. One notable issue is anti-virus and anti-spyware programs that perform a system scan and remove any instances of viruses and/or malware.

Without going into too much detail there is quick fix available from Microsoft at: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060

Scroll down to "Fix it for me", and just click "Fix." This will run a quick installation, and then ask you to restart your computer. If it doesn't ask you, then restart it manually.

Your CD/DVD drive should now show up in My Computer, and should be recognized by all programs.

Hope this helps!

- Regarding the comment about anti-virus/anti-spyware programs:

Programs like Trend-Micro, Kaspersky, and Spysweeper do their job correctly and remove any instances of malware they find, but for some reason this will sometimes remove your CD/DVD drive in Windows Vista. This only seems to occur in Vista as I have seen it a few times. Use the fix I provided to correct this problem.

It could also be a simple case of drive-mapping which you can check my right-clicking "My Computer" and selecting "Manage". Select "Disk Management" on the left pane and you will see all the drives installed on your computer. You will see your hard-drive, your WD external hard-drive, and hopefully your CD/DVD drive. If you see your CD/DVD drive, it may not have a letter associated with it. Simply right-click the CD/DVD drive and select "Change drive letter/path". You can then assign it another letter.

So in summary, check this first.. if you don't have a CD/DVD drive listed in disk management then just run that quick fix I gave you. Running the quick fix first will not damage your computer in any way.

Try going into the Administratiive tools section where you can set the letters used to identify each drive.

Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Storage > Disk Management

Should look like below. See if your list on the bottom right shows a CDRom device, but without the E: where my D: is. If so, right-click it and change the drive letter to E:.
