It very likely needs a new pot switch. That is the rotary one that varies the speed. Purchase through your local Vitamix service agent in your country.

Vitamix says they will fix units up to 20 years old or so????

Depending on what you are blending, the glass can become scratched. Nut shells, coffee beans, some grains will scratch glass and make it look like a film.

Otherwise, it it is a film, you can try soaking it in ammonia if it is soap **** (from low-priced or "natural" soaps used in hard water.

Or soak in vinegar if it is lime from hard water (usually from letting it air dry after washing and rinsing well). Try rinsing in cold water after the hot water rinse to prevent water spots.

You're blending at a high speed and air is getting introduced. Try a slow blend speed. This should solve your issue.

If the burning smells like plastic then the walnut shells most likely put too much strain on the motor and burned it out. If the burning does not smell like plastic then you most likely have walnut shell grit jamming your motor.

This can be cleaned out by first ENSURING IT IS UNPLUGGED FROM THE WALL.

• First remove the canister (if possible)
• The remove the blade (if possible) check for a build up of grit between the blade and the shaft connecting it to the motor.
  
• Check the channel the shaft passes through from the motor for large chunks of walnut shells or date paste.
  
• Clean the canister thoroughly with warm water and leave it to soak overnight in a water/soap mixture.

If this has not resolved the issue then try to claim it under warranty or source replacement parts online.

Instructions for blenders are pretty much the same. Don't put too much in the jar, no more than 3/4 full - I keep mine to 1/2 full. DOn't make recipe too thick or you will stress the motor - add water, milk or other liquid. Don't do ice cubes unless your machine is made for ice crushing. Good luck!

We just had this problem.  Called VitaMix and they talked about resetting the thermal protection switch inside.  They suggested lifting the base down firmly, but gently, on the counter to help the internal switch reset.  I did it while they were on the phone and, sure enough, the machine came back to life.  Hope this helps.
