My generator will turn over but wont start

Our motorhome Onan 5000 Marquis generator will turn over and try to start but fails everytime we test. We have primed, gas and oil are fine and we have new spark plugs. We also changed the gas filter on the generator. Any suggestion? Thanks, Loretta

My onan emerald 1 genset is not transfering charge to the battery

Assuming your generator has the battery charger option?
Measure the battery voltage at the battery lead in the generator, without the unit running, or the motorhome ignition on. It should read approx 12V after the unit has been sitting a while. Then start the generator, it should rise to approx 13.8 with a good battery. If it does not then the stator windings and charge rectifier in the generator should be checked. If the voltage is 13.8 approx with the generator then you problem lies further upstream, and possibly with an isolation solenoid. If you generator does not have a battery charge winding/option then charging comes from the line voltage via a motorhomes inverter, check the inverter.

Is your generator wired in to an automatic switchover in the motorhome, or do you have external plug in on face of generator, or near it. The power from the generator needs to be attached one way or another to the motorhome. It may be as simple as plugging the cord from motorhome into it, depending on what set-up you have.

What about when you have it powering the motorhome, without AC on, does it trip then? Do you have anyone you know with a multimeter and knows how to use it? How about buying a plug in voltage meter at a hardware store as a good start. You simply plug it in to a receptacle in your motorhome and it will tell you the incoming voltage and they are not very expensive. That will help diagnose generator problem.

First thing to check is the battery terminals. Then use a voltmeter to trace the flow.

They MAY have a "fusible link" which looks like a piece of wire but actually fuses (opens) within insulation. They are usually spliced into the regular wire.

If the battery is also charged by the engine, AND you ran the battery down for the vehicle AND they don't have an isolator, the backflow when starting the vehicle could open the fuse or fusible link.

A voltmeter is your friend to trace this out.

Genarator runs short period of time & shut down

What type of motorhome & generator is it. Some generators will shut down (basically run out of gas) at 1/4-1/2 tank in motorhome as a feature, to allow you enough gas to get to a station, in case you forget. The fitting for fuel from tank, for generator is placed that way in tank. Is that not the case? Make sure you have at least 1/2 or more fuel in tank of motorhome just to be sure, as we found many that were supposed to be set about 1/4 tank, but were closer to half tank on motorhome.
