Question about Bose Wave Radio

Open Question

Bose Wave and stuttering sound

1st gen awr1-1w, all capacitors were replaced and radio was working great. Came home one day and radio has no display and is making a sound I can only describe as a stuttering hum, kind of like the old non-resistor spark plugs and the impact it had on th a.m. radio except in this instance there is no other background audio, just the stuttering sound. I've rechecked all capacitors and none appear to be swollen or loose. Pressing the on-off button has no impact.

Actually the problem was caused by a bad 470uf cap, that was used to filter the powersupply for all the analog amps. Replaced the cap the unit works like new.

SOURCE: Non-working CD in Bose wave radio

Try replacing the battery on the bottom of the system - alot of people miss it because you have it constantly plugged into the mains, but replacing this (somehow) re-sets the system, and 9 times out of 10 solves the issue.

SOURCE: My 10 year old Bose wave radio quit working.

There's a line fuse inside the radio, mounted on a PC board. CAUTION: disconnect the set from power before opening the case or poking around inside. The fuse could be bad, but these sets are notorious for losing the power transformer. If the fuse is ok then you are looking at a $100 repair fee from Bose. You might want to check out the new HD radios -- better sound, MUCH lower price.

Replace the 3 AA batteries that maintain memory & backup alarm function. That just may do the trick.

Hello, my wave radio works great, then goes dead, then works great, then goes dead. Radio, cd, aux....Right now it's dead.....any ideas?

It sure sounds like a power supply problem. Probably a capacitor in your main power circuit. Other parts like transistors can be intermittent with heat, but when capacitors go out, they start losing some charge and work to a varying degree. If you think it's a heat problem, you can spray some Circuit Coolant (Freon) to find the culprit. Otherwise, you will have to ohm out components to see what's going on. I would change out the biggest capacitors first. Sometimes they bulge when they go out, sometimes they don't. It could also be a cracked solder joint- look carefully with a magnifying glass. If you see one, you can resolder it. Good luck, nice radio, worth fixing.

Yes you have a defective laser assembly. The 139 is a great price as buying the laser lens alone will cost you around 70 .Bose will also upgrade with any new software and will also provide you with a 1 yr warrenty.

Bose Wave clock radio has no sound.

Unfortunately, Bose will not release their schematics or parts lists, effectively giving them a monopoly on repair of their units. If you check the service/repair page on their web site, www.bose.com, you'll find that they will repair most Wave units for $100 or give you $200 credit towards a new model. Before spending the big bucks though, you might want to check out the new HD radios. Better sound and a MUCH lower price than the Bose.

Sounds like a weak or bad optical pick-up. You could try gently cleaning it, but you'll probably have to send to Bose for repair.
