If there is no oil cooler inside the radiator, the most common cause is a leaking intake or head gasket.

1998 ford explorer>>> how much

To start with the gasket set is about $190.00 and requires new head bolts at about $35.00. I would figure on about 8-10 hours of labor at what ever the going rate is for your area of the country. Assuming the heads don't have to be machined to fix any warpage, the total bill will be in the $1500.00 range.

My 1998 Ford Expidition heater starts our hot then gradually gets cold, what's wrong with it?

If your temp gauge goes up, then it is a head gasket problem, or intake gasket leak that makes it loose pressure.

Have a compression test done ,and look for a vacuum leak near the cylinder, like a vacuum hose or intake gasket. If the compression test shows a fluctuation between the 3 and 4 cylinder, then the head gasket would need to be replaced.

Blown head gasket

I would change both, as well as use new head bolts. Make sure your heads are not warped or cracked, especially the one that is leaking. There may not be any need to change the head if it is not cracked. These are prone to blowing a gasket especially after 150K miles or so. It will not cost a huge additional amount to change both head gaskets since the engine will have to be disassembled down to the heads anyway. Hope this helps you, Rick

If you crank or start he engine and the antifreeze blows out for the radiator it is due to blown head gasket pushing cyl. compression into the cooling system. The head will have to come off.
