Question about GE Dryers
I always use cold water to wash my clothes. Lately though, my GE dryer has been shrinking everything! I really have been doing the same routine for many years but in the last month my family has been complaining (and rightly so) that I'm shrinking their sweatshirts and t-shirts dramatically! I dry it on Low, but I do take it to Optimum dry. I've always done this without a problem until the last month. Any ideas??
The machine has two issues that could cause this:
1. As heating elements age, they got hotter before they burn out.
2. There is a thermostat on the heater element enclosure that controls the heat, this might be going bad.
If you open the panel to see the heating element, there should be a tech sheet in the machine that has temps listed for different settings.
While you are in there, you need to clean it out. It probably has a lot of lint in the machine and this can cause a fire hazard.
The way that you test it is to put a load of damp clothes in the machine and set it and then take the temp at the outlet. You need to use a meat thermometer to check the output temp. Use the chart on the tech sheet to tell if the thermostat is working right. Also it goes without saying that you should unplug the machine for most of this.
