Question about Panasonic PV-V4523S VHS VCR

1 Answer

Once the VCR is turned on, it turns itself off.

Hi! We've noticed that once we turn on our Panasonic PV-V4523S VHS VCR, within a couple of seconds, it turns itself off. There is a red rectangle that appears on the screen where the clock is usually lit or the channels appear. There is nothing on the screen that says it is locked. The VCR turns itself off within a couple of seconds. There is also a head or wheel that is continuing to move without any buttons being pushed. There is not any videos in the VCR at this time either. Is there something we can do to fix this or is the machine done for? Thanks!

So, what would you recommend? Should we take it somewhere to get it fixed or just get a new VCR?

If you have no skills to fix this yourselves, I suggest you take it to the nearest Panasonic repair shop. Before you do that look it up online to see how much a good second hand model of the same type would cost to buy. That will give you the best idea of how much to spend on a repair. Get an estimate from the shop on how much the repair will cost. If it costs about 3 quarters as much as the second hand to repair, I would look to a new VCR. New Panasonic VCR's are not cheap, but they are a good make of VCR. Hope that helps with your deccisson.

If there is a mechanism fault on the VCR then the VCR will shut itself down. It sounds like the mechanism might be jammed, it's trying to move to the right position, when power is applied but can't so it stops. One thing that might be wrong is the mode switch might be faulty. This will cause all sorts of thing to happen, including putting on the timer record light even when none has been set.

If it is not a bad soldering joint somewhere, it could be the mode switch. They can sometimes be cleaned with Servisol Video 40, but you might have to replace it.

How can I remove a stuck video tape from out of a VCR?

You will have to take the cover off. ( un-plug the AC cord)
Look for the loading motor at the back right side.
Rotate the motor and you will see the tray moving thru its cycle to un-load the tape, it does take quite a few turns, its slow.
Let me know if you run into a problem?

VCR acting strange with audio and playing

It sounds like the audio control head is at fault.
If all prerecorded tapes (movies) play with audio level jumping up and down, is is likely that the audio head is dirty. The audio head in the VCR looks very similar to a head of an old audio cassette player.
First, try to clean the audio head by running a VHS head cleanning tape. The cleanning tape will usually clean the path of all tape mechanisms..

Good Luck
