Dremel 395 Rotary tool won't turn on or won't stay on but a second or two

Electrically speaking there are a few items to check.

1) The easiest is to remove the two brush holders screws on each side by the power cord. If one of the screws are loose, or the bushes are worn you will get intermittent or no operation.

2) Second use a volt ohm meter to make sure you have voltage on the two brush connectors inside the brush holders when power is on. If you do then open the unit a check continuity on the motor armature to see if it is open, which will cost $13.37. If you do not have voltage, inspect the power cord and switch.

I was working with the dremel and it shut down and would not turn back on, the motor was not hot. I'm wondering if it has anything to do with the brushes in the side of the motor housing?

My dremel started doing that too. If I rubbed the sanding drum along a piece of wood, it would start up again. I think the brushes and the copper armature get glazed over with non conductive dust and possibly insulation smoke which disconnects it enough to stall out. Change the brushes to the new ones in the kit. After a year of heavy use mine slowwed down to about 300 rpm and then died. A very nice tool but I prefer the Makita which is about three times this size just because it is longer lived.

I plugged my dremel 395 to a 220 volts outlet in Hong Kong, not realizing that it works only on 110 volts. Now it does not work, even with a power converter attached. What needs replacing to make it work?

It is with regret that I must inform you that you will probably have to replace the whole unit, the field coils will have blown and almost certainly the armature - your did give it a 100% over voltage shock. The prices of the parts will be more than the cost of a new machine.

Collet on my dremel is jammed and the hold button is not strong enough to keep it firm while trying to unlock it.

I would hate to try to jam something into the fan, so I think it would be safer to split the case open and then put the armature in a vise. I am pretty sure you can still do that with this model.
Another alternative would be to use an air impact on the collet, since it works on inertia and does not need the shaft to be locked. Of course then you would need to be able to slip a socket over the collet hex part, and you may have to cut off a bit in order to do that.

Most of our issues with Dremel tools is with the plastic brush holder. If the tool is used for exetnded periods of time or 'leaned' on too much the holder will get hot enough melt and keep the brushes from contacting the armature properly. Try taking your brushes out, if they don't slide in and out of the holder freely you may need to file or cut away any plastic that is holding the brushes off the armature. This may require you taking the brush holder out so you don't damage the armature. Be careful with the brush holder, it is not available as a replacement part.

Well, yes you can measure the switch, look for continuity. I suspect something else is wrong, some models had armature issues. Measure the coils and armature for continuity.

Unit wont run at all, yes I do have power, took apart and 1 of the brushes was stuck in slot and it looks like its been really hot.do I need to replace the switch assy. dremel 395 type 4,

I would think that just the brushes, they should slide freely in the slot. check also the condition of the armature for arcing or raised commutator bars.

Motor gets hot very quickly and the brushes are still very good

could be the bearings or the armature rubbing the field. if you had it apart make sure the electrical parts are seated fully.

Worn front bearing on Dremel Multipro

You can put new grease into that bearing without removing it by following the steps in this M.S. Paint drawing I made. After a bit of protest, mine started running a lot better.
