The lower pinion gear is likely broken or cracked. Try this test.
Unplug machine, turn hand wheel full rotation. The hook should also spin a full rotation. If it does not move or moves intermittently the gear needs replacement.

SOURCE: Elna Primula 410 Bobbin Winding Question

Wind the Bobbin
For the usual jobs, it is the best to use a medium sized thread.
2. Disengage the flywheel by unscrewing the coupling knob as far as it will go.

3. Place the bobbin on the bobbin winder, and push the bobbin winder to the right.

4. Pull out one of the spool pins and place the spool of thread on it.

5. Pass the thread through the bobbin winder tension discs, as indicated.

6. Wind the end of the thread around the bobbin by hand, in the direction indicated.

7. Wind the bobbin, at a medium speed by pressing lightly with a finger on the spool so as to stretch the thread better and thus fill the bobbin to a maximum. The full bobbin stops automatically.

8. Re-engage the flywheel by tightening the coupling knob.

9. Cut the thread and remove the bobbin from the bobbin winder by pushing the latter to the left.

SOURCE: Elna SU missing stiches and breaking thread

it sounds like the needle hook timing is out. You need to get the needle in the lowest position and measure the gap from the needle to the hook point on the bobbin shuttle. It should be 1/4". You will need to remove the foot and foot plate to be able to see. I use a 1/4" drill bit as a gauge. If you need to adjust it, you will need to remove the free arm cover to the right of the foot and loosen the 2 allen head screws that hold the drive gear. Adjust the gap, tighten the screws and retry. Usually if the needle catches the thread to early, it will make a bad stitch and the upper thread will break. If it catches to late, it will make thread loops and the machine will skip stitches. Good luck, these are a good machine and worth fixing. Phil

If the fly wheel is going around then the clutch isn't disengaged to wind the bobbin, you need to pull out the flywheel on your model to disengage the clutch for bobbin winding.

tally_girl_59.jpg
Take thread from thread spool across to bobbin winder thread guide, then back to bobbin and thread the tail through the hole on top of the bobbin. Place bobbin onto spindle on top of machine and then push it against the stop to engage the bobbin winding motor. HOld the thread tail up and start winding slowly until the bobbin core has been covered including the starting point. Stop and trim off the thread tail with scissors. COntinue winding bobbin and give the thread a nudge if needed to wind evening top middle and bottom of the bobbin. A good smooth wind is important. Also don't wind at full speed and keep an eye on the thread reel that the thread is coming off, you don't want it bouncing around as this will **** the thread and stretch then relax it affecting your bobbin wind.

Obviously if you know this and the bobbin winding mechanisim is just not working, then it will need a service/replacement by an Elna repair person.

Install a brand new needle. If that doesn't help, the machine is most likely out of time--the needle is arriving at the bobbin at the wrong time to intercept the bobbin thread. Search for sewing machine timing or take it for service.

Has this just started after a jam up? As it's usually a symptom of timing being out.
However first check needle is in right way, flat shank to the back and threading is correct including the take up lever.

Why won't top thread pick up bottom bobbin thread

Simple things to check are:
Needle in backwards?
Winding the flywheel the right direction?
Is machine and bobbin threaded up correctly?

More serious reason would be timing is out; this happens if you've struck a pin, sewing foot or zipper hard and is something for the machine technician. But try the simple stuff first.

Needle will not pick up thread from bobbin

Without looking at the machine it is very difficult to diagnose the problem on here. Double check the machine is threaded properly and that the thread from the bobbin is through the bobbin tension. If all is as it should be and it will still not pick up, the machine needs looking at by a technician as the timing may need adjusting.
