Burner won't come on or shut off have to manually hold contact open

On some gas-powered appliances -- such as gas ranges, water heaters, boilers and gas fireplaces -- the pilot light works to ignite the main flame when the gas is switched on to the burner by the regulating valve. If the pilot light is not lit, the gas burner will not ignite, which could cause a dangerous situation by letting highly flammable gas escape into the air. If the pilot light goes out, you can relight it after the gas is shut off using a match or the unit's electronic ignitor if it has one, following the proper safety precautions

Junkers manual gas hot water

What are you expecting to happen?

I assume the water heater and water inside it is cold (otherwise you would not be lighting it). You light the pilot. The main burner comes on and the pilot lights it. The main burner should stay on until the tank is hot, When the tank gets hot the main burner should shut off but the pilot stay on. If you draw hot water, cold water will run in and cool the tank. If yu do nothing the tank will eventually just cools off. then the main burner should come back on to reheat the tank.

The front burner will not ignite. The middle and rear burners seem to function properly. Any suggestions for what needs to be repaired/replaced?

First Make sure the gas is turned off. You then need to clean the gas orifice and make sure it is not plugged up. Remove the front burner, using a paper clip clean the orifice. Make sore the burner is not plugged up and if it is use a wire brush to clean the burner. If this does not fix your problem the you will need to change the gas control for that burner. I hope this heps you with your problem.
