I have a Kenmore Elite Frontload. I have the same problem. I have never broght so many t-shirts in my life. They get gry spots and eventually become so dingy that they are unbearable. I also get highlighted yellow/grey stains in the armpit area as well. This is too many cases of the same problem. There must a defect with the machines. Is it time for a law suit?
This is from not enough HOT loads.
Fatty deposits gather between the basket and tub during COLD washes.
Then they are being released in large numbers when you do your whites on HOT.
It is recommended to do 1 HOT load per week.
Do an empty load with some degreaser added (like Goo-Gone) on the fullest/hottest setting you have.

Hello Loree Grudem - This can be the result of the shaft bearing and seal. They may have become worn and the transmission oil is creeping up to get in your water. Once this happens, it gets on your clothes to cause staining. Or possibly you have a buildup of fabric softener that comes loose and puts a greasy like substance in your water and on your clothing. Once you put your clothes in the dryer and the old fabric softener melts you will see these spots. I suggest contacting a professional to move forward accurately.
