Question about Sunbeam (0013871361) Humidifier

Open Question

I have a Northern Automatic Steam Vaporizer. I need to clean the electrodes. I viewed the instructions to do so. It says I ca remove the vaporizing head assembly by turning counterclockwise and lifting straight out, but it will not turn at all. I admit, I have had this a long time and have started to use this again recently, but it works well and I want to maintain it. Can you help? Thank you!

SOURCE: my unit wont start

You throw it away. If you must, you can disassemble the unit and clean the metal rods that go into the resevoir, sand paper works well for this, they corrode and won't conduct, cleaned off they almost always work, at least for a little while, but two or three cleanings is usually all they will handle before the rods are simply gone, eaten away by corrosion...

We have a water softener and I think the water has too much salt and therefore, our Vicks vaporizer has too much steam. Any suggestion?

If your softener is working properly, you should never get any salt in your water. The salt is used only to reactivate the ionic media in your softener cartridge, and during the backflush cycle, all that salt is removed, down to PPM (Parts Per Million) levels.
In any case, even if you used salt water in your vaporizer, it would not increase the amount of steam that it produces. Salt water has a higher boiling point than fresh water. You would also notice salt buildup inside the tank as the water level goes down.
The Vicks Vaporizer works by using only heat to produce steam- the hotter it gets, the more steam it makes. The only practical way to get too much steam outside of a malfunction that causes your heating element to get abnormally hot would be if you live at a very high altitude where water boils at a lower temperature.
High humidity in your home will make it appear as if your vaporizer is making too much steam since the surrounding air will be less capable of absorbing it.
A slightly "off topic" note- if you chose the Vicks Vaporizer/humidifier and have children, you have made a wise decision. Because it produces water vapor by heating instead of ultrasonics, contaminants and minerals (such as salt, iron, calcium, etc.) remain in the tank and will not enter the vapor stream.

My vicks vaporizer is not blowing steam is it suppose to. rfinson30@yahoo.com

This vaporizer has two carbon electrodes covered by a 3in black cylinder with a couple of recessed phillips screws that take a narrow long shaft phillips screwdriver. Those two carbon electrodes are about 3/4 inches apart, and the water + a sprinkle of salt set up a resistive path between the electrodes that produces a boiling action on the water, thus steam. The electrolytes in the water, (calcium, iron, magnesium) eventually create a bridge between the electrodes, that allows the voltage to cross the electrodes without heating the water. You would have to take the cylinder off and scrape the built up electrolytes off of the carbon electrodes and reassemble the device, but you can buy another for about 15 bucks, but the same thing will happen again. If you try to use a little less or no salt on the next one it will last a lot longer.

My humidifier is not working. I have cleaned the heating element. When plugged in the green turns on but that is it. The elements are not heating up to begin the vapor process.

Add salt. No more then 1/2 to 3/4tps max depending on the mineral content in your area.

The unit has two electrodes dipped into the water. Since water its self is none conductive without heavy minerals such as iron and such. You will have to add a small amount of salt until current starts flowing between the electrodes. I suggest a small pinch of salt each try until it produces the steam effect you desire.

My vaporizer is making a spitting sound -

No salt, unless you had 0 steam - to stop water spit, throughly clean the water tank, just as clean as new. It will work like new if the tank is as clean as new! I dont know where the small particles of dirt come from, but trust me, I just went thru this with mine, it's got dirt in it!
