The oven safety valve
(also called the gas valve) is the part that ensures that gas is not released until the igniter has reached the correct temperature needed to ignite the gas. While this part can fail, it is uncommon. If the hot surface igniter does not glow you should first verify that you have voltage to the circuit. This is a live voltage check and should be performed by a qualified person. If voltage is lost at the valve terminals then you should verify the continuity of the bi-metal in the valve using a multi-meter.

The oven burner igniter
commonly known as the hot surface igniter is used in modern gas oven burners to open the gas valve and to ignite the gas. As the igniter draws electric current it will heat to a high temperature and glow, as well as cause the bi-metal in the oven safety valve to warp and open the valve releasing the gas to be ignited. This sequence normally takes about a minute. Igniters come in both flat and round styles and are very fragile. If the burner does not light then you should check the igniter first. If the igniter does not glow at all, then check for power to the circuit. This is a live voltage check and should be performed by a qualified person. If power is present then the igniter may be open circuit and can be checked for continuity with a multi-meter. If the igniter is glowing, but the burner is not lighting, the igniter may be weak and still be at fault because it requires a certain amount of current draw to open the valve. This check requires the use of an amp meter and should be performed by a qualified person. If the igniter is defective then it must be replaced.

Hello,

The ignitor is bad again,if it (ignitor) comes on but no flame/heat its the ignotor again, what would make the ignotor go bad so fast (usually last 10-15 years) is a problem with the oven burner, so now BOTH the ignitor and burner would need to be replaced,if it is 15 years old the ignitor is readily avaliable but the burner may not be

Kenmore Gas Range. Top burners work fine. Oven is slow to preheat. Igniter has a yellow glow and the burner lights within about 20-30 seconds later. However, the burner has a very small flame and it takes...

the ignitor should glow bright orange.it sounds like you have a weak ignitor but if the flame lites within 20 to 30 seconds it sounds like it's ok,it could be braking down though when it gets hot,it doesn't matter if it glows,it has to be putting out 3.2 amps,if you have an amp meter with a clamp on it you can read out the amps,if the broiler works ok i would change out the ignitor, then follow the tube down to the bottom and stick a paper clip in the orifice hole where the gas comes out and make sure that's clear, also there's a shutter on the tube to adjust the air flow, see if it's closed,it's usually almost wide open, check the tube to make sure the ignitor didn't burn a hole through it.i've found tubes with holes in them from a lazy ignitor, most of the time if there's a problem it will be the ignitor

IGNITOR WONT LIGHT BURNER

if you have an amp probe. the amp rating should be 3.3to 3.6 amps. if below, the ignitor is bad. these can look like they are working, but still not work enough to lite the burner

I have a Maytag Oven Model CRG9800BAE Will not ignite gas when turned on.

are you saying that when you set it to bake the oven doesn't heat or are you talking about the top burners?if it's the oven you have a bad ignitor, the oven flame should lite in under 40 seconds to a minute,if it doesn't it's the ignitor, part number 12400035 and it's around 80 bucks.unplug it or kill the braker, take out the racks, remove the bottom panel or oven floor, take off the wing nut and remove the metal cover and you'll see the burner tube and the ignitor,,with a wet paper towel wet the screw threds on the two screws with water so they don't strip out and then remove the two screws holding the ignitor on,trust me it works.if you have to, unplug the ignitor or if it's not the original ignitor cut the two wires at the end of the old ignitor and connect the new ignitor with the ceramic wire caps and remove the burner tube if it's hard to get at the ignitor screws.put it back together and the ignitor should lite the flame in less than a minute.let me know how you make out

Oven won't ignite

most likely you have a bad ignitor.take out the racks and remove the floor, you'll see the ignitor, turn on the bake, the ignitor should glow and the flame should lite within 40 seconds,if it doesn't change out the ignitor, even if it glows that doesn't mean the ignitor is still good change it out.let me know what you find and next time send model number

Ignitor lights up bright, but no ignition,no flame and I don't hear the gas turn on like I normally do. Top burners work fine.

Hello, welcome to fixya ! Based on your description I suspect you have a faulty bake ignitor. This may surprise you, or it may not. I think at first it surprises people when the hot surface ignitor glows but the oven won't lite. Since the ignitor "glows" one figures it would appear to be working, that would be wrong. These ignitor's serve 2 functions, 1) need to maintain a set value to open/activate the gas valve, typically around 3.5amps... & 2) ignite the fuel once said gas valve is open. A poor/faulty ignitor may glow & and even ignite the burner intermittently for moments at a time ( thus giving off some heat but never the set amount or not lite at all ) but yet not reach the needed value to open the gas valve/safety valve consistently nor adequately, hence the need to replace the ignitor. Try this and I'm certain you'll be up & running and as they say " cookin' with gas" ! I'd suggest you should refer to your specific model when ordering the part locally or on-line. The most common hot surface ignitor part is #12400035 and it will work in your Whirlpool too. Try places like repairclinic.com, searspartsdirect.com, APwagner.com etc. Thank's for visiting "fixya" for your stove inquiries. Please take a moment while here to rate the solution provided or let me know if you require further assistance and good luck. macmarkus :)

Whirlpool 465. The top range burners will not ignite. I can hear and smell the gas. The oven burner works fine. Do I need to replace an ignitor for the range?

The bake is seperate from the burner ignition system. You may need a new spark module for the top burners. All burners should spark at the same time even if you are only trying to lite one burner.

Burners won't light - Just clicks when set to light

You have an ignitor that is probably bad. And since you're working with gas, just be careful. You do have a pilot light that's electronic that usually allows the burners to ignite. Give us a call and we will be happy ro ship the ignitor to you. Hope this helps! Ella

Roper gas range and oven with electric igniter

First look to see if the ignitor is coming on. Most common problem is the ignitor is weak or just bad. When the power is applied to the ignitor it glows and builds up resistance to open the gas valve then it lights. If the ignitor is weak or bad it will not build up enough resistance for gas to come into the burner. One sign of this would be a "woosh" sound when it trys to light. If the ignitor is coming on but not lighting it is most likely the ignitor is bad. Should have a full glow. Also, if the ignitor looks whiteish in color this is a sign of it going bad. You can compare to the broil ignitor to be sure. If the ignitor doesn't come on at all will need to see if you have power to the ignitor. Let me know what you find and let's solve it before you rate the solution.
