My snowblower won't go into gear when I start it.

If your snow blower is a two stage, you can tilt unit up by handles and carefully rest unit on front auger housing. (Most units you can do this, but be careful, not all do). Then, remove bolts that hold bottom plate on snow blower, and remove bottom plate. If you follow the shift linkage down from handle to where it enters inside the unit, you will soon see how it works. Most types have the gear shifter hooked up to an apparatus that moves a rubber friction disc along a shaft, further towards the center for lower gears and vice versa. My guess is that you need to lubricate the shaft that this rubber disc slides along. Try some white lithium grease and have someone carefully move shifter throughout gear range. Be careful to not get grease on round friction plate below, this is where the rubber friction disc mates up to when drive is engaged(you don't want it slipping). Try this and let me know if you have questions. If you post actual make, model and serial# I can post pics if you like. Good luck and happy wrenching!

My snowblower just died 2 years old its an ariens 8524 just sold it to a friend and he said it siezed up no iol is this possible or is there a saftey device on the engine that just shuts it down

there is a low oil sensor that does shut down the motor when the oil level gets to low -- fill oil to the correct height and try and start the machine.
now if the motor is infact siezed up and wont even pull ( siezed piston ) then there is a chance that the sensor failed and the machine did run out of oil and siezed up. if this is the case then the piston rings will need to be replaced.

Ariens SnowBlower I recently blew a belt on my Ariens 5.5 hp snowblower Mdl# 932140 I replaced it and it blows snow and when i put it in 1st gear the machine goes into reverse. All my other gears work...

Hi dwva, I think you have the belt on properly seeing the other gears work fine. The difference between 1st and reverse can be as little as 1 half in on the drive wheel. It depends on which side of center is the friction wheel riding. Remove bottom pan with the machine in 2nd or 3rd gear notice which side of center is the friction wheel riding. (the friction wheel is the one with a rubber outer ring). Now put it in 1st, is it on the same side of center? There is an adjustment on that linkage, adjust so in 1st is on the same side of center. Happy New Year, hope that helps.

How to change drive belt-Ariens 522 snowblower-model # 938017

Hello,

Which belt? You are referring to the auger drive right? The self propell uses a friction disc drive.

The auger drive has two belts, and in order to replace them you need to seperate the auger from the engine (split) the blower.

Happy days.

I need the owners manual for an Ariens Snowblower ST724 and I can't find it. My snow blower has trouble in the littlest amount of snow it won't go forward in number one gear, any ideas?

You might need to change the friction wheel. I looked up your model number and the part number for the friction disc is PN# 240394. You might be able to get the part locally from your small engine repair shop.
To replace the disc you will need to drain the oil and place some plastic over the gas tank and put the cap on so no gas will leak out. Then you will have tip the blower forward so it is setting on the augers.
Then remove the bolts on the access cover on underside . Once removed you will have to remove the wheel and see what else you will to remove. It is pretty easy to figure it out. If you have to take out the rod that moves the friction disc from side to side (gear shift rod) MAKE SURE IT IS IN PLACE AND WORKING BEFORE REASSEMBLING. Put in fresh oil and remove plastic. It should be up and running.

Good luck let me know if this helps.

Ariens Snowblower won't engage into drive

I had the same problem with my 5HP Dual stage (C950-520240) Canadian model and found that the arm connected to the traction cable (part #85449 "Shaft Traction Clutch") which forces the friction disk up to the rubber friction wheel had a cracked weld and had bent, preventing positive contact with the rubber friction wheel. The drive wheels would turn if you lifted the back of the machine off the ground, but would not work if under load. First I replaced the belt and rubber friction wheel, but no go. I had to basically disassemble the whole drive assembly to find the problem, very frustrating because you could not see the crack in the arm from head on. I had the cracked and bent arm straightened and welded, all is OK now. enb54.jpg
