Re: reformatting

There should be a reovery option for it.  When the system POSTs at the start hit F10  This should bring you to a recovery module.

Emachines 3240 windows xp home edition need to reset to factory settings no disc

Did this come with a recovery disc and you lost it? If it didn't come with one you may have a recovery partition that you can boot to. If there IS a recovery partition you should see a message on bootup that will tell you what button to push to startup to the recovery partition. If you DON'T have a recovery partition your only options are a clean install with a Windows installation disc or to call emachines (gateway) to see if they have a disc to send you.

You can contact them by following the instructions here:

My emachines will not install windows xp, so i tried to install another windows perfessional and it said the disk has exceeded its limet.

Pop the disk in the drive and set off your install.
When the setup gets to the part where it asks you where you would like to install XP you will need to delete the C drive partition, format the partition and install XP.
XP from a clean install only takes 3GB of hard drive space, so unless you are trying to install XP on a drive which is only 2GB then you have no chance until you get a bigger capacity hard drive.

The information will be there at the beginning of setup telling you how many partitions you have (if any) and how big the drive is.

Remember that you need to delete the partitions that holds the older operating system as all the information is still on the drive, deleting the partition will permanently delete the information.

Emachine 3240 possible power problem?

I would suggest try to swap the power supply out with another known good power supply.

I've seen where even though the light on the motherboard is lit, it is not getting enough power to start the machine up, especially if you have a higher end video card connected to it.

Reformating my gateway E 4100

reformatting a drive is a big undertaking, formating the drive will erase everything, including viruses, before you format you need to make sure you have all the discs including the windows disc, driver discs, and a factory restore disc, also you make check the documentation on your system because alot of the gaetway, dell, emachines systems have restore partitions installed on the drive. Also youll need alot of coffee and alot of time, most importantly aside from the windows disc youll need a driver disc for any ethernet or wireless card you have installed. without this you will not have access to the internet most likely and donloading updated drivers is very helpful. This is a time consuming proccess unless there is a restore partition on the harddrive, the documentation will tell you how toaccess it if it exists, if not a restore disc will be nice.

Computer won't boot up

Sometimes you need to do a low level format, rather than the Quick one.
