Question about Home
When I turn the water on, the water comes out of bottom of the unit and pours down the wall. When it's turned off there are no trickles or leaks.
Surely something is leaking. I am attaching a diagram of the parts inside the unit for your reference. See if you can access the parts to find out which one is leaking and replace the broken part.

Usualy when this happens you need to change out the cartrage that controls the water. try to find your faucet at the link below. If you find it click on it scrol down and you can view the manual. It will terr you how to change it out.

shut off the water from the main pipe.
use a allen screw driver take the handle off the shower control.
pull of the wall cover.
pull out the pin that stablized the cartridge in the control body. (remember how it is, before you take it out. or take a digital pic of it). pull out the cartridge. and bring it to any home center or plumbing store.
install in reverse.

the problem is probably not in the actual head but in the valve body where the diverter is attached. It is easy to google something like "how to change the washers on a faucet" and you will find step-by-step instructions on how to do so.

SOURCE: Moen shower/tub faucet
hi... yes that's a very common issue with moen "cartridges" -- it's very simple to fix..... grasp the handle and give it a gentle tug upwards when the water is on... if it retracts again, pull the handle out again and tug again but this time a bit harder. Not sure what causes this on new cartridges but it will fix your issue.
