You didn't say what type of card so I'll assume it's an SD card.
SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the metal contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card.

SD cards allow you to store digital information; you can use SD cards with most electronic devices like digital cameras and computers.
An SD card will become write protected if the switch on the card is placed on the "Lock" position. This prevents any information on the card from being altered or deleted.
If you wish to add, delete or change any of the information, you must remove the write protection.
Remove the SD card from the computer or digital device.
Locate a switch on the bottom or side of the SD card.
Move the switch to the "Unlocked" position to remove the write protection.
If you do not have a switch, you will need to remove the write protection with your computer.
Insert the SD card into your computer's card reader or back into the digital device.
You can now save and change information on the card.

I receive a "communication error"

To address the present problem make sure the camera is off before plugging in the cable either to the computer or the camera. Also make sure the batteries are up to charge, low batteries or batteries that fail during file transfer will corrupt the memory card. With batteries up to charge plug the cable into the camera and the other end into a USB port and turn the camera on. Now, I would like to suggest that you invest in a memory card reader these are fairly inexpensive and can be bought as a single reader for the type of memory card you have or as a multiple card reader for pretty well every memory card that's on the market. To use a Card Reader it plugs into a USB port and the memory card is removed from the camera and inserted into the card slot. The computer recognizes this card reader as an external hard drive and files can be transferred to your computer Hard Drive with ease. One thing you must remember with any external device and that is you need to do a safe disconnect or eject make sure the device is shut off and the file information is downloaded before you remove the memory card or the files/card can become corrupt. Okay once the transfer is completed insert the memory card back into the camera and format the memory card. Don't delete the pictures at this point Format the memory card. Every time you download the pictures to the computer Format the memory card.

I can't get the pictures to download off the memory card and it is write protected what do I do?

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive. Or you can use Nikon Transfer or any other photo cataloging program.

SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card. If the switch is already in the proper position, slide it fully the other way and then back again.

How to remove write protected memory card

Hello sir
  • Insert your memory card into your computer's reader if you have one. If not, you can purchase a multi-format USB Memory Card reader from Amazon.com or Buy.com
  • 2 Open up 'My Computer'. You should see it under the list of available drives.
  • 3 Check its contents first to make sure that you have the right drive.
  • 4 In 'My Computer', right-click on the drive and choose 'Format'.
  • 5 Leave all the options as they are and click on 'Start'. This is a non-reversible process so make sure this is what you truly wanted to do in the first place.
  • 6 Once the process is completed, take the memory card out and insert it into your Digital Camera or any other device. Try to browse to it to make sure it works fine now.

    Write Protect Erro

On SD cards there is a small lock that prevents writing to the cards. Check that.
If you are sure there is nothing on the card, remove it from the camera and insert into a card reader attached to your computer and see if anything is there.
You can try to delete everything on the card from the computer then reinstall it in the camera. MAKE SURE YOU FORMAT THE CARD IN YOUR CAMERA BEFORE TAKING ANY PHOTOS.

    Protected card on screen

If you remove your memory card there may be a little slider on it that is in a "lock" or "protect" position. This is true for SD cards, and there may be similar sliders on other types. Hope this helps.

My camera used to do the same thing--once I got the pictures off my card, I left it in the card reader, right clicked on removable media (my computer + removable storage) chose to "format" and formatted it on my computer. It seems to have fixed the problem, and my camera now reads it fine. I tried to format it on the camera before, but it didnt work.
