Does that specific DVD work in some other DVD player?
Does that specific DVD work in the DVD-drive in your computer?

I bought another DVD player. I found out that all DVD's don't play on all DVD brands of players. They are cheap enough these days so I decided it wasn't worth a repair bill. The Sanyo DWM-400 plays many of my store bought DVD's and not others. I never tried a home made DVD in it so I don't know how it responds.

DVD loading mechanism doesn't load completely that's why opens after attempt of loading.
You need to open top cover of unit and inspect loading belt might be lose, tray timing can be out of phase, some wire got stuck with tray while loading etc.

most dvd recorders have setting to finalize at the end of a timer generated recording, or to fianalize when the disc reaches the end and runs out of room, check for one or both of these settings in the setup menu of the recorder
