You need to replace the belt that propels the vacuum. This is the belt you need:

Self propelled feature does not work. I replaced

There is a cable from the handle down to the transmission on this machine that breaks all the time or the cable is mounted to a plastic piece that is broken. That will need to be replaced.

Self propulsion doesn't work on my upright. Vacuum works fine otherwise

You will need to look @ your owners manual to see where the self propell belt is located i am sure yours is broke and need to replace,- it will not be hard to replace-Lance

No suction

Flip the machine upside down and remove the four screws from the baseplate. Replacement should be fairly self-explanatory from there. If it's a self-propel model, note that the v-belt in the front WILL look loose normally, so it does not usually require replacement.
If you have a self propelled model, the belt you need ends in 035, if it's non self propelled it ends in 033.
Contact me if you need more assistance in changing the belt.

Install self propelled belt

Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. Usually the self propelled vacuum have 2 belts and you should replace them both 2 the same time 1st the self propelled belt and then the brushroll belt. Normally you would hook the belt on the pulley side of the brushroll or self propelled unit and then stretch the belt onto the motor pulley side of the motor using a belt puller or a screwdriver with a bend on the end for pulling and or stretching either belt onto the motor pulley. If you have a problem please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer.

So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.
Thanks, Don the Vac Man

Brush won't turn and self propel doesn't work (by 2 users)
Posted by brucelk on May 24, 2008
I have replaced both the v-belt and the larger belt with Hoover brand belts and the brushes still don't turn properly and the self-propel function doesn't work. It seems that when I lower the handle all the way down toward the floor it works fine, but no one can vacuum this way. Is there an adjustment to belts to tighten them up? Otherwise I have to get it in to the only repair shop in town which is an hour's drive.X

1 Other User Has the Same Problem Comment by chartsell, posted on May 29, 2008 I have replaced both the belts as well. I have tightened the screws as someone else as suggested. The brush still will not turn unless you lower the handle almost to the ground. Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. Hoover U6437-900 / U6439-900 Windtunnel Vacuum. It is not so much the belts, the 2 belts are only part of the solution. The average belt change is every 4 to 6 months as a rule and to change them @ the same time. The Hoover Self-Propelled works on when the handle is lower to a comfortable position then the self-propelled drive may just need and adjustment. There is a self-propelled rod that controls the self-propelled feature and it either needs adjustment or replacement or the part that hold it may be broken but either one can be fixed. So feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer with questions. Hoover wind tunnel upright self propelled. U6473-900. Brush does not work. Heard it was a 'brush controller' problem and can be fixed. Please tell me how.

Most likely the flat belt has stretched enough so as to not turn the pulley that in turn turns the brush roll using a V belt. Also there is a small idler wheel, if hook up, then it won't engage the V belt.

Replace the belt

Take off the bottom plate, put the new belt on the motor shaft first, then stretch it to go over the pulley, it is hard, but it will stretch to go over it.
