Make your own trivet

Sick of boring, factory-made trivets cluttering your dinner table?
Here are a few ideas for homemade trivets, easy to make and pretty to look at.

Stone trivet:
What you need:
- An old carpet (you can also use some felt if you want, but a carpet is more rigid)
- Superglue
- A cutter
- Flat stones
Instructions:
Use the cutter to cut the old carpet into pieces. If you want a classic trivet you can cut out round pieces, but you can take any shape you want.

Before you apply glue to the stones it’s best to wash them and get as much dirt off of them as possible. If the surface is clean they will stick better.

Put some superglue on the first stone. I like to use plenty of glue to make sure it stays in its place. Stick the first stone on the middle of the carpet and work your way to the outside.
When you reach the outside of the carpet, let the stones stick out of the edge a little bit. It looks better because you don’t see the carpet underneath.
Let everything dry for a couple of hours and your home-made stone trivet is ready for use! Handle with care, because stones that didn’t adhere well might fall off.

Old cloths braided trivet:
If you still own old colorful kitchen cloths (or even not colored, since you can dye them yourself) get ready to make pretty braided trivets.
Saw the tip of three long stripes of cloth and braid them neatly. Then start rolling the braid around itself so to create a spiral, and each round saw the sides of the two touching braids. This picture will give you a better idea:

Magazine roll trivet:
Take old magazines or colorful papers and glue three or four papers one over the other.
When the glue is dry cut them in stripes and roll them, gluing them in crucial places but making sure that the glue doesn\'t show on the top, bottom or side of the roll, and then keeping them together with a string.
When all rolls are dry you can either tie them all with strings to one another or glue them so to make a nice and colorful trivet
This is what it should look like in the end:

Pizza dough sticking to pizza stone

Your stone needs to be seasoned better. Use it a few times to bake buttery cookies, buttering it well each time. The fat will absorb into the pan, making it more non stick. Also, greasing it with olive oil before putting the pizza on it may help. You also may try to not have the grill too hot, that it burns up the seasoning.

Cutter does not cut all the way through the dough

Luckily, I have two manual noodle makers, the same brand..with opposite working rollers ...so, using the two units at once, is going to work for me...heck man, I just bought the darn thing last month from ebay...
I thought that maybe just maybe I had a piece of floured crap, causing the cog or gear to stick..

Makita petrol stone cutter

Start by removing the wire from the cut out switch to rule out a problem with the switch, if still no spark with a new plug it will be a replacement ignition unit.

Pizza dough sticks like glue on my Hamilton Beach pizza stone

There are about three things you might consider.
First, you can sprinkle corn meal lightly on the stone and this will help prevent your pizza dough from sticking.
If you're already doing this, you might try spraying with a pan coating before you sprinkle the corn meal on the stone.
Additionally, most of these stones require "seasoning" which is done by rubbing the stone lightly with vegetable oil and placing into the oven at about 300 degrees. Let it heat until the oil starts to smoke. Turn off the oven and let the stone remain in there until it cools. DO NOT WASH IN SOAP AND WATER.Just use a damp cloth to clean.
I hope one of these suggestions help. If they do, please come back to Fixya and rate my advice.

Locked in blade

My old Cuisinart has this problem because the motor shaft and the corresponding socket on the cutter are worn. The shaft has jammed in the cutter. To un-jam it, stick a bar of wood behind one blade of the cutter (I use the wood handle of my dough whisk) and give it a light, sharp tap with a hammer. Check after every tap to see if it is loose, if not do it again. You want to tap against the back side of the cutter, not the cutting edge side. The socket on your cutter may be cracked, allowing it to open up and slip (and jam) under the stress of cutting. You'll probably need a new one. If the motor shaft is also worn, that can also be replaced. The new part is about $10. I got a few more months of life from my cutter by reinforcing the inner socket with a thin plastic tube from the barrel of a syringe.
