I turned our sony bravia tv on this morning and smoke started coming out of the back of the tv, i could also see an orange flashing reflection on the wall behind the tv, so i think it must have been on fire or sparking. after i turned it off at the wall it stopped. its only just over a year old. any ideas what could be wrong with it, or if it would be repairable? Not sure if i want it in my house anymore though, i dont trust it anymore.
This type of failure is not common. You indicate that the set is slightly over a year old. As a first step, I would attempt to request a warranty repair from Sony. If the set is close to the 1 year limit, it may be a bit of a fight, but you may get this repaired under warranty. Realize that you will need to speak to a manager, not the initial rep on the phone. Have a copy of your purchase receipt with the purchase date.
Now to the probable problem. In all likelyhood, a capacitor has failed in the power supply section. Depending upon its function within the circuit, it is possible that it caused the smoke. Until you have a final resolution with Sony, DO NOT open up the unit. Once you do, any possibility of warranty service is voided.
Please update this with any progress you make with Sony and we'll continue from there.

Sir
PIC OFF/TIMER LED-------Green or Orange LED-------
* Lights up in green when Picture Off is activated
* Lights up in orange when the timer is set
When timer is set, the LED remains lit even
when the TV is turned off
thanks

I have seen about a dozen questions here in the last ten days with several models with the same type of problem, Sony of course says they are not aware of this issue---typical for them to deny until smoke turns to fire.....
Hi, Its fixable problem like power supply board replacement will solve the problem. Unplug tv from wall socket for couple of minutes, replug back in and turn it On. If problem still exist then most likely power supply got fired and will be replaced, local tv repair shop will help you to replace power supply board. Thanks.
Call Sony my friend. I have the same exact issue with the same model. They already have a recall for the 46"XBR4. Let Sony know that us 52" owners are having the same issue. I'm essentially calling them everyday until they fix it.
