It sounds like one of the interlocks is open. Probably the one for the safety cage.

Mixer won't start after mixing dough.

There is a good chance you burned up the electrical Connectors to the motor or you have have blown the FUSE that is located inside the housing. The Motor has a Self Shut Off when it overheats but if you have over taxed the motor more than once, then there is a good change you need to repair/replace it with something that can handle harder work. My sister got a Mix Master the same time I got my Kitchen Aid, My Kitchen Aid is running strong since 2003 and her Mix Master died in 2005 and I bought her a Kitchen Aid. Sorry but I am not fond of the Sunbeam Mixer's.... Quality has gone down hill over the years to keep their prices low.

It is not going to be a problem with the motor. It is going to be a chipped/damaged gear, a bent planetary center shaft pin, or possibly the planetary itself.

The first thing you need to do is take the mixer apart. You are going to have to clean of all of the gears and inspect them very closely. I recommend using paper towels and wd-40. If there is any damage, the gear will need to be replaced, in some cases the pin that sits between the worm follower gear and bevel gear can become bent, if it is, it also needs to be replaced. If all of the gears, bearings, and the pin are in perfect shape inspect your planetary assembly. In some cases the center shaft, which is pressed into the planetary can become loose, so it will still spin under no load, but as soon as you put something in the bowl it stops spinning.

Here is a link to the KitchenAid service manual. This will walk you through how to take the mixer apart, and put it back together: http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/mendingshed/kitchenaid6qtservicemanual.pdf

Please let me know if you have any questions, or need help with the repair.

Thank you,

A gasket type rubber ring is coming out of the assembly that the beater is attached to? it will not stay in place. where does it go? in the PLANETARY UNIT?

Get a copy of the Repair Part List for your model at Kitchenaid.com
Download a Copy of the Kitchenaid Service manual.

http://www.kitchenaidparts.be/centers/servicemanual/mixer.pdf

Somehow the O-Ring is coming off of the Vertical Center Shaft (11)
That rubber ring prevents Oil from the transmission gears dripping down
to the Planetary into your mix.

Hello Jovana,

First thing you are going to have to do is take the planetary off and check the key and the gears in the planetary. The parts that you may need to replace are endless as we do not know what may be broke in the unit. More than likely it will be in the planetary of the unit if you get it off and do not find anything post back to this thread and I will get you started on the next step.

Kitchen aid gear- where the beaters are attached - comes out og mixer. Can place back and it works - but how do I fix permanently

Hi BEV, By the symptoms you are describing, it appears that your planetary/agitator shaft (where you attach the beaters) assembly is dropping from the mixer head, is that correct? When you replace the planetary and lift your bowl up into a ‘locked’ position, the planetary is being held in place by the beater resting on the bottom of your mixing bowl and ‘works’ for the time being. However, you don’t want operate your mixer that way for very long.
I suspect what caused the planetary/agitator shaft to drop from the mixer head is that one of the pins used to secure the planetary/agitator shaft assembly to the mixer head has failed (sheared) so now there is nothing holding the planetary/agitator to the mixer head. The good news is that this is fixable.
The inspection and troubleshooting of your mixer’s transmission is a DITY capability, particularly if your mixer is out of warranty. Just be sure to have the correct Part List manual around when you start to disassemble your mixer. If you are lacking one, you can download it from the KA website (http://www.kitchenaid.com/flash.cmd?/#/page/home).
Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals& Guides> and enter the 6 character model number, in your case KSM50PS. Unfortunately, entering your exact model number yields many Owners manual and no Parts Manuals, so I would use the following, KSM500, and select the last file under Parts List (16) KSM500WH0.pdf (857.41 KB). Verify your mixer matches the mixer in the illustrations. Turn to pages 4 & 5, titled ‘Case, Gearing & Planetary Unit, for the disassembly, troubleshooting, and reassembly of your mixer, along with a listing of all the parts. Make sure you inspect
Locate Illust. No. 14, Groove Pin, Part # 9795443. This pin retains the planetary/agitator shaft to the mixer head, and I suspect this is the pin that has failed and needs to be replaced. Getting to it will require the disassembly of the whole transmission. This will be messy as you will need to remove all the grease from the gears and center shaft.
While your mixer’s apart you should check for any other unseemly wear and tear on the gears, etc. You may find more things that need replacement than just the groove pin.
Besides needing a replacement pin and grease, you might consider replacing the gasket, too. I recommend using a food-grade grease that you can order online (although I’ve seen automotive bearing grease used too – your call).
Here are five potential vendors in no particular order: RepairClinic.com; mendingshed.com; searspartsdirect.com; partstore.com; and Grainger.com. You should search for ‘food grade grease’. Prices can vary widely between vendors, so do your comparison shopping.
It can be messy but quite gratifying to diagnose and repair your mixer yourself.
Here’s a link to an excellent site for disassembling/fixing your KA Mixer. Although it’s a different model, the principles are the same: http://www.neilcrockett.com/mixer.htm and another link to a site that details the disassembly and replacement of mixer’s grease, which might be helpful, too. http://www.foodonthefood.com/food_on_the_food/2009/04/how-to-repair-a-kitchenaid-mixer-yourself.htmltl
If you feel troubleshooting and repairing is beyond your capability, then I would seek out a local small appliance repair shop in your area. KA Customer Care can give you names of local KA authorized repair shops in your area, but you can also do an online search to supplement what KA may provide you. Call to explain your circumstances and find out their hourly rate and get an estimate of what they think it would cost to repair your mixer. Also, always obtain three or more estimates – do some comparison shopping.
Good luck and have fun. I hope this helps. Howard, Burke, VA

Dry clumps in pizza dough

Hi. You should consider a few things. They type of hook you use, can greatly affect your end result. If you're making a yeasted dough with a high protein percentage 12-13%, you should be using an "ED" hook, this is a spiral hook that has a sharp turn at the tip. You can find them on eBay for a competitive price. I believe that Hobart also sells them, but for a higher price. They are very good for mixing pizza type doughs, they also do an excellent job kneading the dough.

Have you checked the flour for lumps before it goes into the mixer? Have you tried sifting the flour?
Are you adding all the liquid and flour at once? If so try adding flour in stages to all the liquid. If you find that this solution helps you, please rate it. Good luck! ricardok45

it sounds like you may have a sheared key on one of the shafts.with no product in the mixer will it run in any other speeds?when mixing pizza dough you should only use 1st gear.if it does run in other speeds you have a sheared key or broken shaft,if it doesnt run in any speeds drop the planetary and check the key on that shaft.
