Mine is doing the same now. Just started and I've had the TV for 11 months. Help!

We've had our Vivitek 51" TV for about a year and recently the loud humming started.  We haven't found a solution.  It seems like a lot of other people are having the same problem with this TV.  The humming is driving me crazy.

Had the same problem for over a year now. Sad to say, we kinda just put up with it. The lamp burned out yesterday, I just ordered a replacement and we took the back cover completely off. There's a muffin fan (~5" square) right next to the lamp. I'm guessing that's the one making all the racket. I can't figure out how to remove it, it's got 4 plastic rivet-type snap in fasteners. I didn't see any other fans. My bet is that these fans are a dime a dozen (compared to the bulb).

A follow-up. We replaced the lamp and basically tore the guts completely out. The humming is actually coming from the color wheel which is basically all sealed up. All the fans were fine. It's a very loud hum, that cranks up directly after the lamp is powered on. With the back open, I could see the big muffin fan running and the 2 fans on the power supply/controller box running as quiet as a church mouse. I can't imagine how much the color wheel component costs to replace. This was a very expensive experiment. Steer clear of Vivitek! What a POC!

FIXED it! It was the color wheel. Specifically the drive motor that comes with the color wheel. The part was $90 + s&h and if you can be careful to remember where everything plugs and screws back in, it's a snap to replace. Took my son about 20 min with me holding the flashlight.

Wow, what a difference! The old color wheel motor was much more difficult to turn than the new one.

Email me if you have questions or want more details (

I was about to chalk it up to a really bad $2,000 mistake.

Yup, I have the same Vivitek 56" TV and the color wheel has gone up after about a year and a half. We were able to diagnose that it was the color wheel, but then we had the challenge of a) finding the part and b) finding someone who knows somethong about this TV. Vance Baldwin has the part. If Anyone has had any experience with this and can help us "do it ourselves' we would give it a shot, otherwise we think we found a local guy who might be able to do it. Thanks

Your color wheels are going bad! Then you are left with a large box that can't be fixed because no one manufactures replacement parts! Say good bye to all that money because you were scammed!

Guess what folks. You got scammed too! Your color wheel motor and wheel are going out! There are no replacements parts available for anyone to repair their TV. The MFG would rather the TV get buried in landfill so they can quietly run with your money!

Fixed and very QUIET now!

It was the color wheel drive motor. $90 + s&h

Took about 20 min to replace. The top of the color wheel housing comes off with a couple philips head screws.

The cooling fans can be purchased from or call
Digi-key Corp. at 1-800-344-4539 They don't sell a direct replacemant but they can sell you one that will work. It cost about 19.00 and alot of patience. You have to unplug somethings and remove the chassis. If you have some mechanical ability you can do it.

Making a loud squeal or hum during

Sounds like a motor with bad bearings. In that unit it would be the water pump or condenser fan motor. If the sound is coming from inside the unit it is the water pump.

Being on for while color goes makes humming sound when turned on

Your color wheel is most likely the culprit. Mine also started humming and and it got louder and more annoying.
You could try cleaning it with an air can, but it sounds like it needs replacing.
I replaced mine myself last week and it works great!
Unfortunately, the site I bought mine from is now out of stock. for the 51" Vivitek I have, but they may have yours since they had parts for the 56" as well. was the site I went to.Login as guest and then type model number into corresponding box and see if they are in stock.
I changed mine myself and would be glad to give any help I can.
Good luck!

Flashing in Blk,Wht, and a little color

Sounds like maybe your color wheel needs to be replaced. If you have noticed a humming noise in conjunction with the intermittent colors, then that is most likely the issue.

where's the noise coming from? The back of the set near the lamp? Could be a bad color wheel.

GE SidexSide PSS26SGPASS Makes Humming Noise

GE refrigs have a variable speed evaporator fan motor that is controlled by a computer board on the back of the refrig. now the noise you are hearing is most likely the fan motor ramping up and down in speed (some of my customers say it sounds like a ghost). if its a continuous ramping up and down then the speed cotroller on the board is bad and must be replaced. if its just an occasional sound then thats normal and nothing to worry over.

Btw the reason the noise stops when the door opens is because the fan shuts off when you open the door.
