Toshiba 36A42 TV. Dim Picture

After replacing the I/R sensor on main board. I get a dim picture. Adjusting settings to full bright does little to help. All connections appear good.

did I do something when getting board loose? I am not a fully qualified service person and rarely do this thing, but I can replace a bad component (usually)The manual suggests a brightness control on the main board.I can't locate it...

Re: Toshiba 36A42 TV. Dim Picture

Check the "screen" control on the flyback (lower knob) its easy to hit moving a board around. Try to adjust back to its original setting. Look for where the dust is, it should be on top. Or any marks might help. Other wise adjust slowly, back off if any retrace lines appear, with user settings at there normal settings.

Picture is dim and white is kinda blueish green tinted

Hello jeromek28,

This may be a CRT problem. From what it sounds like i.e. dim picture, colors not bright. If you have a background in electronics I would tell you to check the voltage levels on the CRT pins and compare them to the values on a schematic, however if you do not have a background in electronics, I would suggest you taking the TV to your local TV repair shop and have them troubleshoot your problem.

Here is a possible list of things that might be wrong:

1) CRT going bad (The shop can try CRT rejuvenation if needed)
2) High Voltage on the anode not at proper levels (The shop can check this with a HV probe)
3) Video output levels low (The shop can check the voltage and signal levels on the CRT socket board, and on the video amplifiers.

These are the three primary possible issues.

I hope this helps,

Thank you,

Picture to wide

This trouble symptom picture wide or"blooming", the picture becomes dim even with the brightness control full on,and there is an abnormal enlargement of picture or raster.Usually, the enlargement is uniform, but there may be some defocusing. In some circuits, the brightness control operatesin reverse(rotating the control for an increase in brightness produces a decrease) after reaching a critical point on the control. If the picture wide is not accompanied by insufficient width(a symptom of horizontal output failure) the probable cause is a high volatge circuit ony, particularly the HV rectifier and HV winding.Any circuit problem that reduces but does not completely eliminate the high-voltage output to the picture tube second anode can cause overscan. The most likely defects are leaking high-voltage capacitors, defective high voltge tube rectifiers, leaking high voltage leads, defects in high voltage circuit protective resistance, and shorted turns in high voltage winding of the flyback transformer.

Hope this may help you;

Picture is very dim

there is a problem in the flyback section of the tv set. the fly back has two knobs, one for screen and the other for focus. use the screen knob to adjust the brighness. if it did not help, either check the capacitors around the flyback or change the fly back with a new one. good luck

Tv still dim after adjusting

sounds like you may have gotten a pwer surge and blew out the regulator in the set. If you know how to trouble shoot regulator curcuitds then it could be as simple as the str type regulator. If you dont then open the set and see what module the set has it would start with a 9-something as it should be inside the back cover and then contact and see what they charge to repair the entire pcb or the exchange of the module. As Zenith sets are made to be repaired in house by quilifyed repair stations IN hOUSE. Good luck to ya.
