SOURCE: loading tapes

I have the same problem. If I remove the battery for a few seconds, then replace the battery and wait about 5 seconds, the tape compartment closes.

SOURCE: Hi I have a Sony

The way camcorders and cameras focus is by using tiny electromagnets attached to the focusing ring, and signals from the infrared sensor focus the pic or vid. When dirt, dust, sand, or lint works it's way into the lens assembly, the focusing ring can get slightly jammed. You can try to spray some compressed air into the lens area, in the hope of freeing it up.
Aside from that, there could be an intermittent ribbon connector (slightly loose), or any other number of crazy things that can happen with solder joints and wires, or components.
If the compressed air doesn't fix it, the unit will have to be troubleshot and serviced. Get an estimate first, since it can be costly.
Oh, one other thing. Make sure you have clean battery contacts, both on the unit, and battery. Clean them with a qtip and at least 90% isopropyl alcohol, or a pencil eraser. Slightly oxidized contacts can cause intermittent problems.
Good luck, and hope this helps.

SOURCE: loading tapes

Sony HDR models that the carriage won't close is caused by the mode switch on the chassis. The mode switch controls the cameras function for loading and loading of the cassette. Basically tells the electronics what is happening. This becomes dirty and causes the chassis not to complete it's cycle on eject. Thus staying open. It has no idea where the mechanism is at this time. It can be cleaned and realigned but the chassis needs to be removed to get at it. Definitely a service depot repair. Sorry!

The most likely cause for this is a damaged or defective flexible ribbon cable that connects the LCD to the camera body and can be repaired fairly inexpensively. However, it's not a user serviceable problem and will need to be repaired by a qualified service technician.

My name is Rick and I'm a professional repair technician with over 20 years in the business and have repaired many of these. I'm semi retired and work from home with little overhead so I can keep repair costs low. If you decide to have the camera repaired, please click HERE for a directory listing that suits your needs.

Loading tapes

I had a similar issue where the tape bay would not lock in and engage the motor mechanism to load the tape. I removed the battery from the unit and let it stand for approximately a minute then reinserted the battery. The tape drawer closed first without a tape then reopened with no issue. I then inserted a new tape with no issue. I guess it needed a hard reboot.
