If you are using windows 7, and higher, no hustles, Just find a Windows 7 cd and boot your machine with it, you can actually install a fresh one. Do not repair, Just do a new installation to be on the safe side and Windows will be able to save your data into a folder that will be named WINDOWS.OLD, and you will not need to format your hard disk to achieve this installation.

If the backup and recovery disk are for that model of computer , just remove VISTA or Reformat the hard driver using software outside of Window, then reinstall all the Xp stuff, just as if you had a new hard drive. Save all personal files first, of course..

That is because someone has either removed, formatted or overwritten the partition on which the recovery software was stored. You'll need to find CDs of the software you want, starting with the OS, and install that way.

How do i reset a Lenovo Thinkpad T500

Reset could mean one of several things. I assume you know how to simply reboot it. If it is hung you can hold the power button down for about 6 seconds to turn it off.

If you forgot the password, contact Lenovo support at http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/
Provide them with proof of purchase and original receipt to prove ownership of laptop.

If you want to restore factory defaults then installed on the ThinkPad T500 is a program called Rescue and Recovery, which helps you diagnose and fix problems with the Windows operating system. To access this software, reboot your T500 and press the oval-shaped blue ThinkVantage button -- located on the upper-left area of your keyboard -- when the ThinkPad logo appears. When the Rescue and Recovery menu appears, choose the option that describes what you want to do. Follow the directions on the screen to run the appropriate action.

Performing a System Restore will solve your issue. And you need not worry about losing data. System Restore will not remove or modify any of your data except the recently installed programs and the exe files. This is to help remove virus or a problem that occured after installing a new software or driver.

The partition that had the Lenovo image was on the old hard drive not the new one you purchased, so you will not be able to restore from image. Look on the bottom of the laptop for the Windows version. Is it Windows XP Home or Windows XP Pro? You will need a Microsoft Windows disk to reinstall and you can use the serial number on the sticker to activate. This is all legal because the serial number belongs to the laptop. Unfortunately, finding a Windows software might be difficult. Ask a friend if they have a disk of the same operating system.

Might be easier to take to a tech and pay $60.00 (I wouldn't pay nmore than that) and have them reinstall basic windows and drivers for you.

You will need to do a clean install of your operating system from the disks supplied with your computer, and then immediately afterward, supply yourself with some means of backup of your precious files, which if you have not already performed previous backups are, alas, gone.

Suggest that the backup method be a large external drive where you can store several copies of disk images for your laptop, which will prevent future data loss.

Sorry.
