This has a happy ending. But first, the obligatory narrative:
The HP site has advice on how to deal with a document feeder that doesn't detect your document. It doesn't talk about the opposite problem, which is what molecular is describing. I had the identical problem yesterday. I'd place the original on the glass and it kept demanding that I put the original in the feeder. So I got into a chat session with the HP technician. Her advice, (based on the possibility that a power surge had created the problem) unplug from everything, restart, and retry. The problem persisted. I told her so. She broke the connection. Nice.
So here is how I fixed it. Using the Setup button>Tools>3. Restore factory defaults, I returned the device to its factory settings. I put the original on the glass and it made the copy without a problem.
Here is a pure speculation. There are at least two ways to enter settings related to two-sided copying. I had used one to enter the settings (two-sided original to two-sided copy, as it happens) and later tried to use another button to change those settings. I noticed the 2-sided settings did not change. I believe the feeder is the default for two-sided copying. So when the system failed to clear the settings, it failed to clear the default. Once I returned all settings to the factory originals, the problem disappeared.

SOURCE: WON'T SEND FAX FROM FEEDER.
u can try the following steps >
unplug the power cord from the back of the unit [without turning off the unit ] > press and hold ok and cancel key together > while holding these keys down plug in the power cord back into the unit . do not release the keys > wait for a few seconds it will make certain noises an wud turn off automatically .
turn on the printer again it will go into allignment phase > let it finish.
after its done > try to make a copy from the feeder .
Note - In case [ok and cancel key ] combination doesnot work < u can try # and 6 key combo as well with the same procedure.

If you lift up the lid on your scanning device you will notice a glass strip about 1 inch thick and then the large area of glass used for flatbed scanning. The 1 inch strip is used for ADF scanning. Because your papper is moving across the glass strip, any dot, smudge or scratch will affect your scanning and cause verticial lines down the page. Sometimes the dot is not visible to the eye. Get some glass cleaner that has alcohol in it and thoroughly clean the glass strip and it should solve your problem. If it turns out to be a scratch on the glass then cleaning won't help.

there is probably a dirt spot on the scanner glass where the document feeds in. try cleaning the thin glass under the document feed cover.
