SOURCE: skipping, lack of power, 4 stroke mercruiser

has your boat been sitting more than 60 days. ethanol gas has been proven to only stay stable for 30 days in 90 degree + weather. Labor cost can be up to $100.00 per hour. CHEAP TEST- compression, spark, and fuel. TOOLS(1) A compression gauge (2) a spark gap tester.(3) A Clymer service manual for your engine. (you can purchase from your local dealer). I know all these are expensive but if your going to be a outboard owner you will always need them. TROUBLESHOOTING (1) check compression. without the year model I'm giving you a average numbers. Look at your Clymer manual for specific numbers. all cylinders need to be over 100 lbs and equal each other within 5 lbs.(2) check spark. use a spark gap tester all cylinders should jump a half inch gap. if you have good compression and good spark, fuel is the problem nine times out of ten. Drain gas tank, clean fuel lines replace primer bulb and replace all fuel filters. Finally replace spark plugs, I know spark plugs probably don't look bad but this is a outboard. Fresh spark plugs means less resistance for the ignition system. The ignition system is week compared to automotive. Test drive boat, if the problem is still there then there is further steps to take. Again I don't know the year model so I guessing its fuel injected. Pull out your clymer manual. what is great about the Clymer Manual for Novice techs is it gives detailed info on your outboard. Troubleshooting tips and teaches you how your outboard works.

1998 75 hp mercury outboard continuous alarm where is the module or sensor

If it is flowing good stream of cooling water, then it is probably the low oil sensor in the tank. It is located at the bottom of the tank.

Yamaha 115 4 stroke alarm sounds when boat is in neutral. forward or reverse no alarm. oil is good and water out of the spout.

Which alarm is sounding? Oil or overheating? You need to figure this out first! ... Is the water coming out of the spout high pressure or can you hold your finger over it and stop the flow? If you can stop the flow, you have a bad water pump impeller. If not... you are probably getting good water pressure. If your oil tank is full, the low level sensor is dirty or bad..this will cause the alarm..Fix each of these and repost.

1998 1150412UD Mercury Outboard - is it 2 or 4 stroke

If it has an oil compartment, it has to be a two stroke. There is a rough and ready way to check. A four stroke engine has a compression stroke on every four strokes, whereas a two stroke has compression stroke on EVERY upward stroke of the piston. Remove the spark plugs, and turn the engine until you see the piston. Put your finger over the plug hole and turn the engine one revolution. Do you get compression? Keep turning, do you get suction and then compression again. If so it is a two stroke.

you can also follow the pipes from the oil tank and see where they go to? Yours should have a pipe from the pump to the carburetor inlet manifold.

On a new boat though, my advice for you is to take the boat and engine to a marine engineer for a service. The cost is minimal and you will get everything set up for the season, especially the carbs. You can ask lots of questions. The cost is about $150 and is well worth the piece of mind that you are not going to break down.

The critical bit you have missed from your post is the HP. If you Google

Mercury HP Serials

and you will end up at a site with engine details. Then google the same, but manual instead of serials. If you know the year of the boat, add that before 'Mercury'.

Use Evinrude XD50 two stroke oil. It is expensive but the best in clean running, non fouling and lack of acrid fumes. One $48 jug will last a season and a bit if you go out twice a week as I do. My boat goes to the marina on Wednesday :>)

Why is a constant alarm sounding when ignition key is turned on?

Just had the same issue with my 92 mercury 2 stroke outboard. It could be the oil sensor temp sensor or the moduel for the 2.

2000 mercury 225 outboard engine

There is a float in the reservoir and this is what causes the problem. There is a YouTube video which shows how to test. In the video the problem was the sensor and replacing the reservoir for a new one solved the problem.

This is the video, I found it.

I have an early 80's model mercury outboard 70 hp. When I start the engine the low oil buzzer for the two stroke oil goes off. But the tank is full. How do I fix this problem ? Thanks

if the tank is full of oil but the alarm activates , I would start at the level indicator as being faulty
normally it is like a small float on the oil ( broken off ,full of oil and sunk) or a series resistance that activates when there is no oil to close the circuit off
Test by removing it and placing it in a jar of oil or moving the level manually to see if the alarm cuts in/out after that
after that if the problem still exists then you may have to check the wiring for corrosion in the wire, at the terminals , fuse box or alarm connections

Me boat shows low fuel error but the tank is full. The motor alarm comes on and it only allows you to travel at 5 knots as it appears there is a computer malfunction. It's a Stejcart boat with a Mercury...

You need to hook it up to a DDT box to see what codes are present. Are we talking about fuel or oil? Low oil in the motor tank (or a bad oil tank sender) will definitely make it go into gaurdian mode.

I have a Mercury 90 hp outboard and the alarm is beeping. I added oil and the water outlet is running properly. How can I shut the beeper off? What's wrong? Larry

Hi, follow the wires from the bottom of the oil reservoir and unplug them at the connection. If the alarm stops then the sensor or built in float is faulty. Replace the sensor first, if this solves the problem no more action is required. If it still alarms you will need to replace the reservoir as well, as the float is not removable. Hope this helps, regards Phil.
