Question about Sewing Machines

Singer sewing 411g

I have a Singer 411g which has served me very well for over 45 years. I recently let someone else use it and it promptly developed a problem. I was not there so don't know what, if anything, she did wrong but it started to "run away with itself", operating at high speed of its own accord without any contact with the foot pedal. Switching off at the socket was the only way to stop it. I have since tentatively tried to use it; it works fine for a couple of minutes or so before starting the same problem and need to switch off at socket. Any ideas? Is it a short or something in the foot pedal and what can I do?

It is most likely the foot pedal has failed. The pedal motor circuit is very simple and it is not possible for any other component to cause the machine to go into a race condition other than a defective pedal.

Check the spring return of the pedal. If it is not operating freely it might be repairable. If it is not the spring then the pedal is not likely repairable..

Parts are still available.
Hope this helps?

Singer Sewing Machine Company Serial Numbers

As far as value, that is very subjective. Singer has made machines for well over 100 years and made probably million or more. So, that said, unless it is a rare, well-sought-after machine in exceptionally good visual and operating condition with accessories included, probably not a lot. Most people use these either as decoration or for actual sewing use, not so much for collectibility. You can always check web auctions like eBay to see if anything similar is listed or has sold recently.

You should be able to take your straight stitch foot to a local sewing shop and ask for a zig-zag foot that will work on your machine. Other alternatives would be searching online, ie:

Replace the screw. This model has a twist & click bulb. Push in, twist, and pull out. Be careful. If the bulb is quite old, it can be brittle and break.

How to the timing on a sewing machine

all sewing machines are the same a very simple. to adjust timing so the bobbin catches the thread, just slightly loosen screw on the main needle shaft(the one that has the needle and goes up and down), move the flywheel so that bobbin point is behind needle at lowest point, tighten screw. test it out. you cannot break the sewing machine, tho you can break a few needles as you master the timing technique. dont be afraid to try. it really is easy. one summer many, many years ago, while i was in college i worked for singer in a singer store. things havent changed since then. (almost 45 years ago). good luck
