a 6ya Technician can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repair professionals here in the US.
click here to Talk to a Technician (only for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

SOURCE: dvd drive won't work
The drive is probably defective. You can try to reseat the drive. Usually they're held in with one screw on the bottom of the laptop. Once you remove the screw you can just pull the drive out like a drawer and then stick it back in. If it doesn't work then it's likely that it's defective. You can get a replacement on ebay by model number or using the part numbers that are on the drive itself.
Hope this helps!

I just wanted to post a reply regarding a missing dvd/cd in the ?My Computer? & in the ?Device Manager?. I bought my Acer5610z in September of 2007, about March of 2008 I was unable to use my dvd/cd because it was not being recognized by the computer. This was very frustrating as I like to back up files often. I have tried EVERYTHING! 1)I have tried to mess with the registry as suggested by several sites.. NOTHING 2)I have tried to uninstall any applications which would mess with my player such as ITunes..etc.. NOTHING 3)I would have tried to restore my settings back to factory default but I cannot remember my freaking password for erecovery.. So this was not, nor is it still an option for me. (Anyone who reads this and knows a lil trick for me to fix that issue please feel free to let me know. thanks.. Anyways.. I found this website and got very excited because I seen all the great comments and thought to myself, now maybe after about a year (give or take)I might be able to burn cds again! You will never guess how I fixed this issue!!! *I first took out several screws on the back of my laptop..scared I was gonna mess up my comp.. but didn?t.. whew.. For the life of me I could not find a way to access the dvd disk drive to ensure things were plugged in properly. (I never messed with a laptop yet) I couldn?t find it.. Then my lover found a site online which detailed how to remove the dvd/cd drive to ensure it is plugged in all the way, sound scary? meh.. Turns out all you have to do is eject the disk (use paperclip into hole) and you can gently pull on the metal that you see holding the edge of the dvd player. Pull it all the way out (its a plug n play so don?t worry about cords)on my Aspire 5610z anyways CHECK YOUR SYSTEM DETAILS TO ENSURE IT DOES NOT COME WITH CORDS) Replace the dvd/cd back into the slot and press firmly but not too firm to break it (you want to make sure its plugged in all the way) Reboot.. Voiiiiiila! xoxox I looked forever for this stupidly simple alternative to messing with the registry etc..

SOURCE: no dvd/cd rom icon
From what I read, Acer Empowering software is no big deal. Some say it's fine, others say nothing worthwhile. If you aren't thrilled with it, you might consider uninstalling it and seeing if it brings your CD-rom back. If you want to keep it or uninstall of Empowering software doesn't work, uninstall the CD-rom and then let Windows rediscover and install it again.
Go into Device Manager, right click on CD-rom and choose uninstall. Close out and restart.
