SOURCE: acer 5610z need to locate cmos battery for bios password reset

If you have forgotten your BIOS or system password, there are no software tricks or magical gimmicks that will get the password cleared. Laptops are different in that they are designed to not work with “backdoors” etc. for security reasons. There is one true way that works most of the time and that is hardware.
The Cmos (RTC) battery that is mounted on the motherboard in most cases holds the key, if your motherboard has the battery that is connected to the motherboard by using a two wire socket that plugs into the MOBO, then here is the procedure.
On the motherboard where the battery plugs into, you will see two pins sticking straight up, these engage the plug on the battery side. These two pins have to be “shorted” and then the motherboard powered up for approx. 30 seconds, then power down the system and replace the Cmos battery and reboot. Your password problem should be cleared up. The best way to “short” the pins is get another cmos battery and cut the wires from the battery part, bare the ends and twist together, this will short the pins. Make sure you tape the connection good on the jumper you just made….don’t want to touch anything else with powered up bare wires. Below is the link to your service manual that will point everything out to you. Good luck.

When you boot up to the log in screen type in administrator as user to log in if you cant log in

during the boot up process you will see on the screen for a short amount of time press a certain key to enter set up press and hold that key during the boot up process to enter BIOS scroll down to set user password or supervisor password you can change or remove your password from there

The most common way that we know on how to reset or clear the BIOS password is to physically remove the power from the computer by disconnecting the power plug and then removing the Cmos battery for 30 minutes from the motherboard. Another way is to reset the clear CMOS jumper on the motherboard itself. Both of the 2 methods mentioned works because most motherboards use a battery to sustain the BIOS/CMOS settings for the motherboards PROM chip. So by cutting off cmos the battery power, the BIOS/CMOS settings will be erased. Hope this helps

Forgot password to my ibm thinkpad 2373

Which password have you forgotten? If it is the Power On password this can be reset by briefly removing the connection from the system board to the cmos battery. If it is the Supervisor password you can either send it to Lenovo for a replacement system board and hard drive or send to me and I will return with password removed. fixmythinkpad@btinternet.com Regards Paul

How do i get into bios on a ibm thinkpad 1800/R52? seems like it needs a password. all i want to do is reinstall windows and i cant boot from cd

helo

go to the link below to get further assistance
but basically to reset the password, follow these steps.

If the Power-on password (POP) is forgotten and the Supervisor password is known, simply go into the ThinkPad BIOS setup utility and reset the Power-on password, otherwise try the following:
  1. Turn off the computer.
  2. Remove the battery pack.
  3. Remove the backup battery (CMOS battery --size of coin- located on mainboard, requires you to remove the plastic cover on rear on computer)
  4. Turn on the computer and wait until the POST ends. After the POST ends, the password prompt does not appear. The POP has been removed.
  5. Reinstall the backup battery and the battery pack.
Note: Some ThinkPad systems have the ability to reset the Power-on passwords in the ThinkPad BIOS setup utility if a Supervisor password has been set.
