SOURCE: I have a Pentair 40,000 BTU pool and spa heater.

The heater is trying to light but cannot. Either the igniter is broken or you are not getting any gas to the igniter. Check to make sure your gas valves are on.

SOURCE: Pentair Master Temp 400 E05

If you've already changed the thermal regulator then the only other thing it could be is the flue/flame sensor.

It could be just a loose or bad connection so I'd check them first before replacing it.

If you've got a meter then you could disconnect the sensor and check its continuity (should be 3-4M Ohms). If its OK then check the continuity of the wiring between the sensor and board.

SOURCE: master temp 400 with E05 error message, already replaced stack flue sensor, thermistor, and igniter. Any suggestions?

I have had the same problem with my '400' since it was new. I contacted the manufacturer and got the run around. I have been trying to get this resolved and now, a year and a half later, have decided to buy a different heater. Anyone want to buy a hardly used Pentair 400? sandtrap699@yahoo.com

When turning on power display reads 128 then error code r 13, after this it say's spa on but the temp reads 126 and the water temp is only about 68 so the heater never comes on.

This is not an error code. 128 r13 is the normal programming or software version for your model. you need to press the spa on button again, make sure the temp set point is higher then the actual water temperature

I turn on the heater and get error code R=9 and then shuts off....what do I do?

Hi,
R9 is not an error code, but a software revision code.

Here is what you should do.
Take off the front panel underneath the circuit board.
Turn the heater on, if it doesn't Fire and gives no error code you need to look at the back of he circuit board and see what red lights are on. If you find one on there will be letters next to it to point you in the right direction of the issue. Example h1 or h2 would mean high limit 1 or 2.
If you don't have space to look by taking off the front panel only then you would have to take all panels off and get the top loose so you can lift it carefully to access the back of the circuit board.
Once you've done this let me know what you find and I may be able to further assist

What is a thermostat plunger?

If anything is corroded, Thermister or Temp Sensor, just replace them.

I have the same exact problem with this unit. Obviously getting gas to the unit, because it runs and pumps out some serious heat for a short time, but then kicks off. Did anyone ever figure this out or did you buy a new heater? :-)

Pentair 400 2 yrs old won't heat spa to 98 degrees F.

This could be a number of things. Most often it will be the internal by-pass. You find the assembly inside the water header, it controls water flow through the heater. When it goes bad it can open at a low temp and keep the water from going through the heater.
Also you will want to check the temp probe on the side of the header. If this is bad it will usually show up on the temp display though.
