If you haven't yet programmed it for your area, you won't get much - if any - reception. Most Radio Shack stores will program the scanner for you, or at least give you some valuable assistance in programming it. They can also sell you programming software to simplify the task. IMHO the Butel software available from ScannerMaster.com is the best on the market, and it will let you download virtually every frequency and system in your area directly to the scanner. I also suggest that you visit www.RadioReference.com for a comprehensive database of active freqs and systems in your area, and a lot of other useful scanning information.

I HAVE A PRO -34 SCANNER AND NEED THE CIGARETTE LIGHTER ADAPTER, OLD ONE WAS CAT.# 270-1560 WHAR IS THE NEW ONE I NEED. AND WHERE CAN I GET ONE. HAVE BEEN TO 6 STORES LOCAL, AND NO ONE KNOW'S.

You need a 9-volt automotive power supply, but I couldn't find the plug type that the scanner needs. Radio shack, and probably stores like Wal-Mart carry them. Just take the scanner or old supply with you to check the plug size. You can also use a universal supply, such as this one that I found on eBay:

Hello, i just got my scanner working and need to know what everyone is talking about. How do I find all the codes for san joaquin count california? so, pd, fire, etc? thank you My scanner is not the one...

Congrats on entering the scanner world. Two different points of information you'll need:
1. Local municipal services' radio frequencies
2. Download a "10-code" definition list

If you google search San Joaquin County and "radio frequencies" you get a list of all the local radio frequencies that the local services in your area are broadcasting on. Then you can program them into your scanner... sorry if you already figured this part out..
Secondly, you can download a police call 10-code definition list and you be up and running. Print out your code list and you'll have alot of them memorized real quick. Also you'll get used to the local abbreviations being used in your area... for example in my area, "ECR" means El Camino Real.. a main street near here.
Have a blast..
