There are two different memory modules for that series. You can determine which you need by the chipset for you machine. If you have a Via VN800 Chipset You need the 1024MB-DDR333, 333MHz, PC2700, 200p SODIMM, 2.5v. If you have the NVIDIA nForce 410 Chipset The you need the 1024MB-533MHz DDR2-533 PC2-4200, 200p SODIMM, 1.8v Hope this clears up your problem

SOURCE: Gateway 7405 GX Fully shuts down at random intervals

It sounds like a thermal shut down when the processor over heats, one thing it might be is that the heat sink is not seated properly on the processor. When removing the heat sink make sure you have thermal paste to place between the processor and heat sink. That should give you a good starting point.

SOURCE: gateway m685 freezes after it runs for awhile, then more quickly

It is probably being caused from over heating.

Are the cooling fans running? If so, get a can of air from an electronic store, and blow the cooling system out from the exhaust in to the fan. Stop the fan from turning with a paperclip or something.

What would make my laptop come on but go back off

You operating system is corrupted. Your computer is fine. Open it in "Safe Mode" using a function key, "F" something. (You will have to look it up for e Gateway as they are different for different mfrs.) Select "Safe Mode with Networking." The computer should boot up for you, but the screen will be different. At START type in: "cmd" a new (backdoor) window will pop up. type in "chkdsk/f" exactly where the cursor lands you. Without quotation marks, of course. Let Microsoft repair the program for you as you wait. Be patient, it takes some time. Reboot afterwards and your PC should behave as normal.

How long does it take?

In my shop, depending on parts, if I have it for more than 2 weeks I am embarrassed.. usually a week is enough time to effect any repair. Of course this doesn't include time taken for parts to arrive. This can make it up to six weeks sometimes, but if the usual parts are on hand, then a week to ten days would indicate a professional setup. anything else, would either be suspect, or VERY good and worked under.. it's easy to tell the difference.

I have a virus

sorry to hear about that. Have you still got the restore disks from when you purchased the computer? If not contact the supplier and ask them to send you some, it will put your computer back to its original state from when you purchased it.
