Dell inspiron 531 (windows XP) keeps shutting down after a few minutes of being turned on. some music was down loaded and the anti-virus software was disabled. It would not enable afterwards. so I uninstalled it and reinstalled it and tried to run it, but the computer keeps cutting off after a few minutes of being on. I have tried running the micrsoft windows malicious software, but it never finishes because the computer will cut off.

SOURCE: Missing Windows XP Product Key-Need to Reinstall/Repair XP

I'm assuming you have quite a lot of computer savvy??? You'll need to access that drive and get the original key off it. Try connecting the drive to another pc and see if you can get to the Windows folder. Once there, use Jellybean Keyfinder to navigate to the Windows folder in that drive and take note of the OS key. From there you can reformat and use the existing key.

SOURCE: Can't factory restore dell inspiron 531 (windows xp).

You might want to try going into setup and setting your boot drive options to DVD drive as your 1st, HD as 2nd and Floppy as 3rd. Put your windows disk in the DVD before boot and run the program from DVD.

The first thing you should do is back up the HDD, Remove the HDD from your Laptop, you find the lid that opens the HDD access slot under the laptop or ask someone who knows how. if available there are aftermarket 2.5 HD enclosures that lets you install the 2.5 in.hdd of your laptop via a usb. you can plug the usb to a desktop PC and backup your files. then reformat your hdd. reinstall the hdd to your laptop. replace your memory ram which causes the blue screen with a new ram, reinstall the OS.

Why does my Dell Inspiron 531 keep shutting down?

cpu maybe overheating, check all fans are working, maybe a fault in motherboard. There should also before an error report log on your operating system which might give you a clue. try putting your hard drive into another pc (as a slave drive) and scan it for viruses before putting it back into your pc as the master again.

Why does My Dell Inspiron 531 computer keep turning off

There are several possible causes for this. Laptops are notorious for dust buildup and overheat issues. Take compressed air and blast out the vent areas. If you can push enough air through the vent leading to the CPU cooling fan, that may clear out dust clogging the fan, preventing proper CPU cooling.

The next possible issue is a threat.

Boot into safe mode - keep repeatidly pressing F8 key as soon as you power on - until a menu comes up. Using keyboard up/down arrow, select "Safe Mode" (with networking if available).

Next, install Malwarebytes (free version) and perform a full scan. Also scan using your current antivirus.

hope this helps,

Antivirus wont turn on in settings

Is your Anti Virus Up-To-Date? Will it update? Depending on the Brand of software(you didn't post), Anti Virus, that's installed. The windows Security Center may not recognize it. Open Security Center and change Notification of Anti Virus. First make sure it hasn't been compromised, if you are infected the infected file will shut down your Anti Virus. Use this freeware program to verify a clean system , MALWAREBYTES: http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/ In the install, UNCHECK the Trial Pro version, you want the freeware version, Run a FULL scan, delete ALL results, reboot. Depending on the size of your HDD, it may take hours. Post results and your Anti Virus Software Manufacturer.

I have the hp inspiron 531s.Can i burn cd or dvd??

Yes your computer has a DVD writer... It should have the software to burn DVDs and CDs

The Dell Inspiron 531 is a desktop personal computer with a Microsoft Windows operating system. An Inspiron equipped with a CD burner can be used to record audio discs using Windows Media Player, which comes installed on the Inspiron as a standard part of the software package Dell loads onto its computers. Blank, recordable discs and pre-recorded audio CDs are the only supplies needed for the project.

Dell Inspiron 531 keeps shutting itself off. After a few moments, tries to restart. and shuts down, almost like it's hibernating, or overheating. New PSU and re-thermal'd the processor/fan

Try removing every single thing in the box you are comfortable with removing - reinstalling.
Take each piece starting with one stick of ram - clean the connectors -[ shiny copper or gold looking area] with a clean pencil eraser.
Install each one - one at a time.
First one stick of ram.
Then another - then a removed card - one at a time.
If this problem continues after reinstalling only the first stick of ram - you may have to re-seat the processor - jell- fan. It takes some doing sometimes to hunt this down - so do not eliminate the power supply either - think about removing it and trying another if all of the above fails to fix the problem.
One last thing - if you have Windows 7 and didn't buy it retail - Windows 7 is shutting down because it is not a legit copy.
Best of it

Explorer.exe uses all available CPU

Norton anti-virus is a resource HOG. Disable it from running at start-up. It may be trying to download updates as the pc is booting. Use AVG anti virus, it is free and works very well.

Unwanted down loads

if you have an anti virus programme installed, start your pc in safe mode (F8 while booting up) and then run your anti virus and anti spyware programme and also check your temp folder for suspicious folders dated arond the time you downloaded, the only free good anti virus programme is AVG 8 free if you don't have one.
