Can your antena on your gps go bad and if so can it be fixed

I have 2 Lcx 28c hd units tied in series the units started aquiring sat and then signal lost every 30 seconds or so all day long made unit not usable. The next time I went to the lake they would not pick up a signal at all. I was on lake for about 3hrs and never worked. I had a problem last year getting signal and losing signal since I had 2 units I had a second antena and I put it on and fixed the problem. I cannot afford to buy new antenas each year now. Can you help? Thanks in advance George

SOURCE: Aquiring a GPS signal

hi,
If you have any signal problem again please follow the steps given below it works..,
NOTE: If you are trying these steps from your vehicle, it is
Recommended to follow when the vehicle is in a stationary position.
Make sure that the device is exposed to the clear view of sky.

With the antenna pointing upwards, remove the antenna and then re-insert.
Swivel it up and down to make sure its securely placed.

wait for few mins and check the signal indicator.
Still not working,

  • Turn on the unit and select any user.
  • Make sure that the antenna is in the upright position and the unit has
a direct line of sight with the sky.
  • Select 'Option' from the keypad.
  • Then select 'Configuration'.
  • Scroll down to select 'Diagnostics'.
  • Scroll down again to select 'Initialize GPS'.
  • At this point you would receive two options, 'Yes or No' - select 'YES'.
  • Now scroll down and select 'Set GPS Position'.
  • Enter your City, Street name and number at the corresponding
    prompts.

NOTE: The address that you are entering in the Set GPS Position should be the address at which you are at that point of time.

SOURCE: i have a lcx 28c hd fish finding sonar and mapping gps

I've had several similar units, and used them with Navionics HotMaps Premium series chips. You must select Menu. The "Browse files" to access the MMC card option. Once the selection screen opens, choose which card or file you want.

FYI...All of Lowrances HD models come preloaded with pretty much every major lake and river in the US.

Lemme know if this helps...

How much torque on the transducer mounting bolt?

I install these and other Lowrance systems.
For me there is no specific amount of tourque, it's primarily your best judgment.
You want the bolt tight enough so that the transducer doesn't pivot while on plane but if it were to collide with something it would pivot up out of the way.

GPS 40 will not finish aquiring signal

make sure the gps have a full view of the sky. leave it in aquiring mode and let it sit there. My Emap took up to 35 mins once to reaquire the sats and get the updated info needed for position info.
if the unit has been off for a long time or moved a long distance from where it was last turned on, it can take a while for it to come back up.

Trying to figure out how to start up my fuel guage on my Lowrance

You need to purchase a EP 60 fuel flow meter. Once you have it installed in your boat, you need to monitor it. You set it up under NMEA DEVICES on your setup menu,

Lowrance LCX 28c HD with Navionics HotMaps Premium SD chip. Chip worked fine last fall but when I went to use yesterday the Lowrance would not read the chip.

I had the same problem with my handheld Lowrance Hunt C. After installing the card and locking it in place, I had to slide the card "out" toward the locking mechanism. It barely moves, but worked after that. Whenever I load the card, I now slide it out or wiggle it and it works every time.

Receiver not picking up satalites

Sometimes it could take up to 10-30 mins with the GPS turned on and in a clear sky veiw , also not moving -like just laying on the porch or dashboard of a car to re-aquire sats and it datum table.

If that does not work, to fix the antenna would mean prying the unit apart to access the connection on the board.
