Did you have things apart far enough to mess with the scanner.  The scanner should move to one side when it first goes on, and then trip a sensor (home position sensor).  Also, the scanner is probably belt or cable driven.  Check to see that the belt is somewhat tight, and that the gears and pulleys leading to the scanner motor are in place and not broken.

The light doesn't have to come on in order for it to see what it's doing, but it may go to that area and briefly turn the light on to make sure it's working.  But the fact that it's clicking indicates that there's a mechanical failure somewhere.  If  you can take it apart partially and watch the grears and pulleys as it happens, it will be easier to see where the clicking comes from.  They usually don't make service manuals for these machines, so you just kind of have to figure out how to get it apart.

  • Eric Engel Oct 28, 2007

Ok...it's trying to get to home position but something is probably blocking it.  See if you can manually keep it moving once it starts clicking.  I would say that it got to home position and didn't know it if it had moved all the way to the end and then tried to keep going.  But if it moves to the middle, that usually means something is blocking its path.

  • Eric Engel Oct 28, 2007

No...it's almost definitely a mechanical problem.  When you mve it by hand, does it continue to click where ever you move it to, does it stop clicking, or does it do the rest of the scan and then it happens again on the next round?

Sometimes the gear on the scan motor comes unstuck from the shaft.  If this is the case, pull the gear off and put a drop of superglue on the shaft and then put the gear back on.  But there's probably a cracked gear somewhere in the works.  When you take it apart, there's no tension on it so it closes back together and you can't see it.

So is the scanner going all the way to one side when it starts clicking or is it in the middle of the glass?  If it's all the way at the side when it clicks, then look at either side of the scan unit.  It will have something (like a little metal or plastic protrusion) that passes into a little black sensor to tell it that it's reached home position and that it's time to stop.  Sometimes the sensor gets knocked out of place.

  • Eric Engel Oct 28, 2007

Ok...if you're sure that it is indeed activating the home position sensor, then you'll have to follow that sensor to where it hooks up to the board and make sure it's connected correctly.  If you feel confident enough, you can even stick a meter on there and make sure you get a voltage change when the printer is on and something activates the sensor.  If you don't see a voltage change, it's probably the sensor itself (or the connection...look for a break in the wire).  If you do see a voltage change, then it is probably the board.  But make sure that the scanner is physically activating it first.

you have a bad door switch, the best way to find out which door switch is bad is to have the computer scaned, may need a garage to scan, this will show the open door switch on the scanner. hope this is helpful.

When I scaned my finger it said Too Short and will not open

Well first of all, get ***********'s finger to scan. The system probably locked you out because it doesn't recognize your fingerprint.
And if you have scanned your fingerprint as a key PRIOR to this situation then wait for your computer to load then calmly swipe your finger again.

Your arm of cover sensor has fallen off'

Try CACY solution for a great quick fix

It is the switch fallen to bits

How it should be, or can be if you put it together again.

It might be possible to snap the part back on without partial disassembly, or simply shove something in there to hold the sensor in the 'closed' possition (If you lose a finger or two using this method, don't blame me)

The lid sensor is a tiny microswitch that is on the main circuit board...there is a white nylon lever arm snapped onto the switch.

if the lever arm falls off (like mine did) the 'cover open' error will last forever.

This may (or may not) be possible do fix without some disassembly. This lever arm should stick up through a rectangular hole that's approximately 1/2" to the right of the print head (assuming print head is parked in the middle) and behind it.

Most likely if your lever arm has fallen off, shaking the printer gently upside down with the cover open will allow it to fall out.

Now if you are a dentist or a surgeon, snapping the lever bit back on is no problem without taking anything apart.

I am neither. For the brave (of foolish) ones who like to do surgery, here goes. Here's how I took mine apart....if yours breaks into a million bits, don't blame me.

0) unplug the power and take the scanner cover off.

1) release the 'kickstand' from the scanner by prying and squeezing it with pliers until the two prongs pop out (or crack and break)

2) detach the scanner hinges by prying/squeezing with pliers until they pop off (or crack and break). (CAUTION: read step 3 below first...don't just yank the scanner off without reading step 3)

3) Carefully unplug ribbon cable and other connector to scanner and set scanner aside.

4) remove screws at front of beige plastic part....pry at the back carefully and this will pop off....sending the screws flying if you left them loose in their little wells. Don't worry, there are only two of them that really do anything anyway.

5) Look towards the rear of the printer and you will see the circuit board and the 'hole' where you can see the sensor, and possibly your white nylon lever arm lying pathetically down in the bowels of the printer.

6) Retrieve and Carefully snap the nylon lever arm back on, and think nasty thoughts about the brainiac who designed that part.

reverse the above steps. Put at least most of the screws back in, or the front panel may fall off at a later date.

Take care to GENTLY plug the ribbon cable and the other scanner connector back in, making sure it's seated all the way. Try not to bend or kink the end of it, or it will be toast.

Good luck, and happy lexmarking.....
