Num lock in Windows 8.1 won't stay on.

At night I shut down my computer for the night. Next morning I turn the power switch on after I plug the cord in the wall. The first page has the time date year and month. I then click on the left mouse button and the password page comes up. I then type my password but no keys will work. I then click caps Lock + num lock. The letters and top row of numbers will work. NOW the fun starts trying to get the numlk. key right hand pad numbers to print. I have tried many different ways to make then work, but no luck. I up graded from 8 to 8.1 windows to have more apps. and etc. Can you help in any way to over come this PROBLEM? If you have any comments please email me. ekarweic@rochester.rr.com Earl Karweick Thanks for reading this!!!! PS-This computer is only 8 months old.

What make and model is it? If this is a standalone keyboard, change it out.

SOURCE: Keyboard Produces Numbers Instead of Letters

I have the same problem. Click the Windows start button. At the bottom is a Windows Serach box. Type 'keyboard'. A virtual keyboard appears. Click the NumLock key on the Virtual Keyboard. This should override the issue you are having and your keyboard and keys should now work. Otherwise reboot!

SOURCE: A few days ago when I was on the the laptop

The Function keys up top will not do anything when not in a program that has them set.

The num lock key on most laptops does not itself work: it must be pressed in conjunction with another key. This is normally the "FN" key at the lower left.

Please try pressing the "FN" key while you press the "num lock" key and see if this now works.

If the power light doesn't come on at all, it could be the power supply is dead, or the power switch is defective.

Check to make sure the power cord and power supply cables are securely connected.

Sounds like it is locked up. There should be a power switch on the back. Switch it off, leave it off for a few minutes, then turn the back power switch on again and push the front power switch. If no rear switch, pull the plug. Windows doesn't like hard power downs, but if your system won't recognize the keystrokes or mouse movement, tere is nothing else you can do.

Hi.

Take out the AC power jack and then remove the laptop battery. Plug AC power back in and see if the laptop will turn on. If it turns on let it boot the operating system and then shut down as normal, remove the power cord and reinsert the battery and again see if it will switch on. If it does then there has been a glitch with the battery. If it doesn't then there is a problem with the battery.

If the laptop won't switch on either with or without the battery then there is a possibility that the motherboard has developed a problem.

Good luck.

Hello

Do a hard reset on the laptop by removing all cords and connections from the computer, including the power cord. Turn the computer over and slide the tab next to the battery, then lift the battery out of its compartment.

Eject any SD cards currently inserted in the SD card slot by pressing on them, then remove them from the slot completely. Hold the computer's "Power" button down for at least 15 seconds, then plug the power cord into the computer and turn it on.

Watch to see if the LED lights near the "Caps Lock" and "Num Lock" illuminate. If the lights do not turn on and the computer's screen remains blank, inspect the power cord and AC adapter for damage and replace them if necessary.

Leave the power cord plugged into the computer and snap the battery back into its slot. Allow the computer to sit for at least 30 minutes, then unplug the power cord and press the "Power" button again to see if the computer will turn on.

Plug the power cord back into the computer and try to turn it on again. If the computer turns on, replace the battery with a new one. If the computer still does not turn on, take the computer to a repair shop.

I shut my computer down at night, but can't get on Internet next

There is no reason to shut down either the router or modem. My router and modem has power 24/7 with no issues for many years. Just leave them powered.

I left it on last night. This morning it was off

check your power cord to insure that you are getting power. make sure power cord is plug in the back.
look in back of computer. you will see a little orange switch. it says 115/220 click to 220. boot computer.
if computer boots up turn off and click back over to 115.
if it does not boot your power supply in your computer needs replacement.

Gateway desktop 506gr power issue narrowed down?

That was pretty unclear.  Is there a kind of burning symptom that suggests a short to you?  It seems to me that what happened is that either there was a power outage and your system thus shut down...all you'd have to to would be hit the computer's power button to turn it back on...or a fan somewhere died and therefore the system won't power up until you replace or repair that.  At least get a vacuum in there and brush out the dust so you can work.

What happened when you got a simplified system that 'worked'?  Was the power supply's fan spinning, at least?  What's the green light on, anyhow?
