First, push the Pitch control in so that it is turned off. Then if that is not it the deck need a servicing. Also make sure the Pinch roller is making good contact top the capstan shaft- if not the tape will slide through.

I have a Tascam 488 mk II that will rewind and fast forward, but will not Play or record. Does anyone know a solution to fix this problem?

Check too make sure that the tabs on the cassette itself are there if they are gone place a piece of tape over them, then try recording again. It may be a belt issue open the unit and see if all the belts are present cassettes usually have 2 or 3 separate belts one controlling the fast forward and rewind and another for record and play more than likely this is the issue, If so belts for these units are obsolete try searching science and surplus magazine catalog they carry a variety of large rubber band / belts you may get lucky and find one there good luck I hope this helps you

Tape heads are stuck will not disengage. transport will rew and fast forward but will not play or record. also could not eject tape. unit is a tascam porta one mini studio.

There is a cam system in the transport and they need to be lubricated. It might cost more than $100 to fix. Sometimes the gears have rounded off teeth that you can not get anymore.

Tascam 644 When I press play it won''t stay on play, it stops. It will rewind and fast forward but that too stops by itself.

Scott has a point. You need to determine what is causing the unit to stop and it could be a bad cam motor belt if it has one or the lack of take-up die to the bad idler or even a dead spot on the reel motor. The reel motor will work normally at high speeds due to inertia but at low speeds as are used in play the dead spot of the motor can become much more apparent.

Tascam midstudio 644 powers up and can rewind and fast forward.

You have not mentioned the model. Hope you have checked the belt and the motor that drives teh main capstain and the reel drives. If this does not work then replace and proceed. Also the pinch roller could be defective and not holding pressure to the spindle. Check the roller for hardening of the rubbers. replace if this is faulty. I hope with the set loaded with a tape you can find which drive is not spinning to take up. This should be able to confirm you with the right section. Hope this helps. Good day

Us-144 working only on high latency!

Even my q6600 clocked at 3.6 Ghz gives me 12ms latency. It turns out the tascam highest latency is 12ms also on my p3 3.0 ghz pc. I haven't tried the tascam on my q6600 - I use an Emu 1820m on that. But try testing the tascam on a really fast computer. It's probably your dell's middling motherboard that's the slow down as well as all the extra stuff installed on dell's and especially notebooks that are robbing the usb bus of it's bandwidth. In most cases with the tascam, it's the pc or a low latency setting. If you want a great card for serious work: The EMU 1616m pcmcia card is a great card! Even SoundonSound loves them. Emu just makes great soundcards that rival any card out there for the best prices. Emu also gives the most control via it's excellent PatchMix software, but Patchmix does require an average IQ and about 10 minutes of reading.

Dual Cassette Deck won't stop or auto-reverse

There is a tape tension sensor which, it appears, isn't working. Check to see if the linkage to this sensor may have been misaligned while you were replacing the belts. Also check to see that the sensor isn't binding or sticking.
