Disconnect whatever you have connected to the solid blue wire in the Alpine plug, and re-connect it to the blue/white wire instead.

Installed Alpine CDE-121 in May, has worked great up until now. System works, but no sound comes out

Some models of some vehicles have a power amplifier that is separate from the head unit. You did not specify what you have your Alpine installed in but you may find the "no sound" issue involves a separate power amp.

No sound with USB and IPOD Apline IDA-X100

You connected your blue alpine wire (power antenna) to your blue wire (amplifier remote on) on the BMW harness adapter. You need to undo this, amputate your blue alpine wire (because your E36 has no power antenna) and connect the alpine blue wire with white stripe (remote power) to your blue wire on the harness adapter.

When you switch source from the radio, alpine is shutting off your amplifier through the connected power antenna wire. Since you're not listening to the radio anymore, it sees no reason why it should give it power.

Alpine 7800F No sound, don't read.

Blown audio output IC, possibly from miswiring speakers, or accidentaly shorting out one of the speaker wires. It will need to be repaired, or replaced.

Peripheral's Connex2Car adapter to an Alpine CDA-9851

the alpine should recognize it as a "changer" when you select the source; ie: radio, CD, changer. Sounds simple, but have you turned up the volume on the iPod?
The Alpine adapter is $100, but works great, you can totally control all your iPods functions, and it displays all song info on the Alpine decks display.
