Lower the fflash power setting if posible,\. Then you will have to open the aperture more or use a slower shutter speed. This is true wether using the camera built in flash or an external flash. Even with freshly charged batteries, the capacitor that releases the charge to the flash tube will lose all charge and have to be recharged. Lowering the output releases mless charge from that capacitor. Like drinking from a glass, smaller gulps=more drinking time.

Flash busy signal

This is perfectly normal, the flash uses short burst of electricity that are stored in a large state capacitor. This has to be recharged after so many pictures. You can go as fast as the SD card will allow even if the flash is charging, simply close the flash and continue taking photos without it, no effect apart from loss of some illumination depending on the conditions.

Battery dies right away

You might want to try NON rechargeable batteries, particularly "digitally" rated alkalines. If this won't do it, I'd take it to get looked at.
