Question about Canon imagePROGRAF iPF5100 17" Large-Format Inkjet Printer
The Printer sat for about a year. when we tried to start it up, it said to replace the left print head. Once it initializes the message light blinks and you can't access any of the menu buttons. even in service mode after following the user guide procedure to replace the head, it just keeps saying replace the print head. There's got to be something that resets the controller to tell the unit a new head has been installed. I can't find that yet.

SOURCE: faulty print head
I beleive instructions are included with the new printhead From Canon's site: You may purchase a print head* for this printer through an Authorized Service Facility ( Find a Service Location) , or by calling 1-800-828-4040 between 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 a.m. midnight, EST, Monday through Sunday. When calling, speak the phrase "order parts" when the speech routing system asks the reason for your call. You will immediately be routed to the Parts Desk for assistance. Be sure to have your model number (i9100) or part number (QY6-0039-000) ready for the sales person. * Please be aware that the part is not returnable. That should do it Ed

SOURCE: No ink
hi i am a certified Canon repair tech for this fax. the problem that you are having is very common and has to do with two things. the cartridge and the purge/cleaning unit. what you can try is this open the printer and center the carridge unit and remove the cartridge. unplug the machine while it is still centered. on the right hand side you will see the purge unit. in the center of the purge unit is what looks like a retanglar pad. mix a water soap solution and apply to pad just soaking it. let it sit for a few minutes. take the ink cartridge and wipe the bottom of the cartridge with a damp soapy cloth. also if you look at the cartridge there is a little breating hole you can hold a cloth on the bottom and gently blow in that hole it will purge ink through the bottom of the cartridge. install the cartridge in the machine close the front door and replug in the power cord. you might still have to run a few cleaning cycles. hope this helps.

This is simply a case of the ink tanks not being pressed in hard enough. They do click in, as the manual instructs but, unless they are fully pressed in top and bottom, this problem occurs. It's a shame that the Canon manuals and even the support centre do not mention this simple solution.
