there are more possible solutions and cause of this error. First of all the sc code and the sign for no toner are connected. The sc code mean that is there is no toner in the developer hopper. First of all if this code appeared after you replaced the developer, you will need did you connected the two connectors that connect the developer unit with the machine, and also check do the developer unit is properly inserted into the machine. But if this problem ocured before you replaced the developer, than the problem is with the toner holder. Open the front door and check the white hook that pulls out the toner bottle cap when the bottle is home position. This white hook is located on the back of the toner bottle holder. you will notice it when you pull the bottle from 90 degrees angle into home position how it slides on the metal rail located next to the toner bottle holder on the right corner of the machine. If it is broken or out of position than that is the problem. If this part is ok that open the front door and put something like a screwdriver in the upper taster that detects do the front door is closed its located above the red main switch, you will notice a hole with a bronze colored plate inside. The other switch is located on the front right bottom corner next to the third paper tray, you will notice a hole in the olive-brown color plastic. When you will insert something into this two holes the machine will think that the front door is closed and it start the toner loading process. While the machine run, with the door open notice do the toner bottle rotates.If does not rotate than the motor that rotate the bottle is not working. If non of this help than tell me and i will tell you other possible solutions.

been released and, if not, release the
lock (see page 1-2-15).
2. Check that the gears and spiral screw of
the developer unit are not damaged.
3. Confirm that the developer roller can
rotate.
4. If it won't rotate, replace the developer
unit (see page 1-5-57).

1. To check the motor operation, execute
DLP(MCY) by U030 (see page 1-3-34).
2. Check the drive gear can rotate or they
are not unusually loaded and, if
necessary, replace.

Toner gets in the developing assembly toner sensor (TS1) and may be shorting out the sensor. Blow out any toner in the sensor wiring and check to see if measure resolved the symptom. The toner level sensor has an open-circuit, replace the toner sensor.

However, re-attachment of the sensor also solves the symptom.

When the symptom has occurred, make the following selections in service mode [COPIER > I/O > DC-CON] and check the setting for the bit1 of [P021]. If the setting is "1", re-attach the toner sensor.

One problem found has been the toner sensor scraper blade in the developer not making contact with the surface of the toner sensor.
To check the toner sensor scraper blade first set up a work area. Lay out several sheets of 11 x17 paper on the work surface. Disassembling the developer is a messy job. Remove the upper cover of the developer and then rotate the developer in a counter clock wise direction. Basically the cylinder should rotate so the toner is scraped off of the cylinder by the developer blade.
If it is rotated in the wrong direction a large amount of toner will adhere to the developer cylinder and makes a mess.
The toner sensor is located on the on the outside of the developer and part of it goes through the wall of the developer unit.

Next look at the inside surface of the developer where the toner sensor is mounted while rotating the developer cylinder in the correct direction. There is a mylar scraper sheet that needs to touch the inside surface of the developer wall. In the image below the inside surface of the developer wall is being touched by the mylar scraper blade. If the blade is damaged or broken off the toner will not be cleaned off of the sensor and give the error code E024. If the blade is the problem the developer will need to be replaced.
The part number for the developer is FM2-0287-010.

If the code comes back, you need a Fusing unit ( DO NOT KEEP TRYING TO RESET THE MACHINE! THE MACHINE IS TELLING YOU THERE IS A PROBLEM!!!!! A Fire could occur and that would ruin a perfectly good day!!!!


1. Turn ON the main power switch (SW1).
2. With the Utility/Counter button pressed, turn ON the power switch (SW2).
3. Press [Trouble reset] to release a trouble with [OK] displayed.
4. Turn OFF and ON the power switch (SW2).

The probable causes for error :

The developer has deteriorated.
• The developing cylinder fails to
rotate.
• The developing assembly is not
locked.
• The toner concentration (patch
detection) sensor is faulty.
• The developer inside the
developing assembly is faulty.
• The toner level sensor is faulty.
• The concentration sensor is
subjected to stray light (no cover,
front cover open).
• The photosensitive drum has
deteriorated.

In error code E020-0481, means that the problem is in black developer. So I would first try to replace Bk developer, check the developer station for malfunctions ( broken gears, broken developing roller bushings,... ).

Please I have canon copier IR3170C but it has been giving me this error code E000021 - 0001 any time i on the machine and it is being boot. Please help me out. thanks

E021-000x Error Code: Developing rotary does not rotate and abnormal noise comes from motor.

E021 can be displayed when an error occurs in the developing rotary.
The detail codes are:
0001: The developing rotary home position cannot be detected.
0002: The intervals of flag detection during rotation is too short or long.
0003: The sensor does not detect the flag when the developing rotary stops at development point

As a result of inspection, it was found that the DC Controller PCB was unable to control the motor because it was faulty.

Workaround :
1. Check whether or not the developing rotary receives any physical load.
Rotate the developing rotary in a counterclockwise direction by hand to see whether it rotates smoothly. If any abnormality is found, eliminate the root cause. No problem is found, go to the Step 2.
2. Make sure that the connectors are securely fitted between J313 on the DC Controller PCB and the Rotary Motor (M8) or there is no pinched wire. No problem is found, go to the Step 3.
3. Replace the DC Controller PCB with a new one. If the symptom still recurs, go to the Step 4.
4. Replace the Rotary Motor with a new one.
