It depends on what kind of browser you are using. Simplest solution is to download Google Chrome (https://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/browser/). This allows you to do many nice things, such as search from the address bar using google. Google is also the default home page.

HOW DO I MAKE YAHOO MY HOMEPAGE?

This method works to set any website as your homepage.

Open your internet browser.
At the top near the URL search bar, refresh, etc., will be a button for internet settings. (usually in the top right, sometimes corner)
Click settings.
Depending on the browser, look for "homepage" or possibly "on startup" where you can then set pages for your browser to open up specific pages, such as Yahoo, upon opening the internet.
Here's an image of what it should look like if you use google chrome as your browser.

Google search was my homepage, but now yahoo has taken over. How do I get back to google and get rid of yahoo

I strongly recommend you read http://google-redirect-virus.info/prevent-google-redirect-virus.htm GOOGLE REDIRECT VIRUS Although the page says 'things to prevent redirect virus' it is a good free method of protecting you computer from anything. How you change your default search depends on the browser but its pretty easy to do.

Yahoo isn't listed as a possible default browser-how do i make it my default browser

Yahoo doesn't offer a browser of their own. You can make it the default homepage of any browser.

Internet Explorer, Firefox (Mozilla), Chrome (by Google) and Opera are browsers most commonly used with Windows. Safari is the Mac OSX/iOS browser.

In Internet Explorer to make a page the default homepage, open the Tools menu. (Click on the Gear icon or Tools (press Alt to show the menu)) Then select Internet Options. In the General tab, you can either set the current page as the default homepage or enter a specific URL to be the homepage. Click Apply to save your changes and click OK. When you restart IE, the listed page will be the homepage.

In Firefox, click Tools and then Options. Under the General Tab, you will be able to enter your homepage choice.

Similar options exist for other browsers but I don't know their toolbars.

If you can't reset the homepage, either malware has been installed or a malware blocker is actively preventing you from changing the homepage. (A malware blocker should pop up with an "I've stopped this action" message. Then you should be able to disable it to change your homepage and then re-enable it.)

I hope this helps.

Cindy Wells
(Yahoo does have their own IM program but I don't know the program. For Windows, you can select the default program in the Control Panel. For Win7 Start > Control Panel > Programs > Set Default Programs and Set Program Access and Computer Defaults.)
