To force it open you can use a paper clip. Bend it open so you can stick the end of it into a little hole that is right near the disc drive. This will release the spring to allow it to open. The reason it is not opening on it's own, could be that it is no longer getting any power (disconnected cable inside the box) or that the drive itself has failed.

So, first open it up manually with a paper clip and then if nothing happens when you push it back in then either a cable issue or bad drive...

SOURCE: HP DC7700 small form factor.

Are the Keyboard and Mouse USB or Wireless USB. Meaning those Wireless keyboards and mice that you can get and from Microsoft or Logitech. Make sure you have batteries replaced or recharged for your keyboard and mouse. Then see if this solved the problem.

Computer booting problem

On some of these, there is an internal circuit breaker on the power supply. You can try unplugging it, hold the power button down for about 30 seconds, then plugging it back in. That can alow the power supply to reset.

It is most likely that your hard drive has gone bad or is no longer being recognized by the system. Run drive diagnostics check from the BIO and if the drive is faulty, replace the drive.

Err1err3

There are several issues that can cause this err1err3 issue. It could be a bad hard disc (or a bad wire between the drive and the motherboard), an incorrect BIOS setting for the SATA hard drive or a problem with the master boot record (MBR). Make sure that there is no disc in the CD drive and disconnect any external storage devices (flash drive). Your computer may be trying to boot from a non-bootable disc.

To check the BIOS setting, turn off the computer and turn it back on. Press F10 continuously to access the BIOS on an HP computer. Some HP computers use F2 or F6. There should be a splash screen that tells you which to use. (If you see the error again, try this step again. It's easy to not have the key press noticed between the POST and the attempt to boot the computer.) Once in the BIOS, go to the Advanced Settings tab (one to the right) and go down to the SATA1 controller option. (Try AHCI.) Then press F10 to save and exit. (Note this isn't part of the BIOS on all HP machines - it does work for some.) See if there is a Diagnostics tab in the BIOS and try running the hard drive test.

Get an hard drive testing utility (ISO) and burn it to CD on another computer. You can set the first boot location when you go into the BIOS as above. With the bootable CD in the drive, restart the computer. (Some machines let you set the one-time boot location by pressing F12 on start up; as with entering the BIOS, it's easy to miss the timing. Just repeat the attempt.)

If the disc tests as good, you can try to repair the MBR. Use a repair tool or an OS install disc for your version of Vista (Home Premium). Boot from the CD as above. With the install disc, follow the on- screen directions and select the Repair option. You will need to enter the Command line mode. You'll need to enter Bootrec with the correct option. For more information, see the following document: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927392 .

If you possibly can, remove the drive from your current computer before trying the repair. Use a USB/IDE/SATA adapter and another computer, see if the data on the disc can be copied to make a back up. This will work if the disc is still good. (It will also indicate if the cable was the problem if the disc failed the diagnostic tests.)

I hope this helps.

Hard drive has bad sectors. Before your replace your hard drive when getting this error, try this- Boot from a Windows XP CD and choose Repair at the first prompt to get the recovery console. Type "chkdsk c: /p/r" at the prompt. Repeat until there are no errors found. Exit and reboot. It worked for me.

  2. Shut down the computer if it is running.
  3. Press the power button to turn on the computer.
  4. Press f10 when the HP/Compaq logo displays.
  5. After the BIOS Setup Utility displays, use the Right Arrow key to select the Diagnostics menu.
  6. Select HDD Self-Test options .
  7. Press enter to display a list of HDD/Self-Test options.
  8. Select Notebook Hard Drive and then press f10 to display an Estimated test time .

If the hard drive fails then surely there is no option other than replacing it....
