If it is a wireless keyboard it should have come with a dongle that you plug into a PS/2 or USB(if newer keyboard then usually a USB) port. Turn on the computer. There might be buttons on your keyboard and dongle that you have to use to sync them together.

It seems that the keyboard is not communicating correctly with Windows 7 or your operating system, maybe even with your Dell PC, remember that Dells, Compaq's and other major PC companies program their systems so that consumers will only purchase their factory products. First make sure that you have installed the correct drivers for that keyboard, also try swapping with a friends keyboard and see if the problem continues if it stops with a keyboard swap then the Microsoft keyboard is not compatible which seems rare but possible. Good luck.

I need to change a keyboard on an dell inpiron 1501, but not sure how?

Using a flathead screw driver, pry up the hinge cover(plastic above keyboard) to remove it. Remove the two screws securing the keyboard to the chassis. lift and pull the keyboard to lcd from the chassis. Rotate the keyboard cable lock, and then remove the keyboard.

My optical mouse is working but not my keyboard

If all of the keys on your keyboard is not responding, then there's no connection between the keyboard and the wireless receiver.

1. Change the battery of the keyboard.
2. Make sure that the keyboard is ON.
3. Try connecting the wireless receiver into other USB ports of the computer. If same problem occurs...
4. Connect the wireless receiver into another computer to make sure that the problem is the keyboard and not the USB ports of the computer.

Otherwise, you may contact the manufacturer of the keyboard to verify if there's an additional driver that you need to install or if the keyboard needs repair.

Have a great day!

You can try reseating the keyboard connector. If that doesn’t work, the keyboard needs to be replaced. To reseat the keyboard connector, follow this link: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins5100/en/sm/keyboard.htm#1084976
Be sure to remove AC power and the Battery.

Installing memory on a Dell laptop

Are you sure you have to access memory via the keyboard. Most dells have a compartment on the underneath

The following link on the Dell site shows you how to install additional memory. I'm sure it will show how to unclip the keyboard.
