When I push the button and start cutting, why does the chain kick off?

Review the new chain installation procedure to be sure it was looped over the drive gear correctly. Also, the bar may have readjusted itself after you applied tension and tightened the hardware.

What are the steps to getting the chain saw started and idling? What are next steps to cut tree limbs and oil the chain? This chain saw was given to me without a manual.

If you are a complete novice you should seek some training before attempting to use the machine, as you do not say what model this is we will go through basic starting procedures, fill the fuel tank with fresh fuel mixed with two stroke oil at 25-1, fill the chain oil tank with a non fling chain oil, switch the ignition switch to on, pull the choke fully out, push in the deco valve if fitted, place the machine on the ground, with the tip of the bar away from any obstructions, put your right foot through the back handle to hold the saw down, place your straightened left arm and hand onto the top handle again to hold the machine, now with your right hand crank the engine until it fires once, at this point push the choke fully back in, crank the engine once again until it fires up, flick the trigger to dissengage the part throttle , the machine should now idle.
Be carefull.

I have a efco 165 chainsaw and for no reason i will be cutting good clean wood and it will just go dull. there's no cut marks inside like it hit metal. it has been doing it since it was new.

It seems like they supplied the machine with an inferior standard chain, replace the chain with a good brand and see if that solves the problem. (Chain saws are not too fond of cutting dry wood, they do far better in wet, green wood).

My Stihl 028WB chainsaw will start and run a little, will cut for a short time but then the chain slows down and no matter if I hold the throttle wide open it will not cut fast and basically won't cut. The...

Check the engine running (it should 4-stroke at speed when not cutting, but will immediately 2-stroke when cutting) after removing the bar and chain. If the engine seems ok now, check that oil is oozing out of the engine side port. If ok, clean the oil ports at the drive end of the bar including the two small ports that go out to the chain groove on each side, then clean the entire chain groove. Oil the end sprocket (if it exists) and check it's turning. Reinstall the bar and chain, and adjust the chain until it just stops drooping from the lower bar, but not so tight that it can't be turned by hand. If no oil came out of the engine port in the first test, then troubleshoot the oil pumping system from the oil tank filter to the oil pump itself. The chain should cut at any running speed, just not as fast. Make sure that it is properly sharpened. Clean the air cleaner and the muffler if either is plugged. If you have further problems, suggest taking the machine to a Stihl repair center for carburetor service if needed. Hope this helps!

Hot chain saw wont start

When it won't start, remove the spark plug, lay the base on engine metal with the wire on, and pull through. The spark should be blue and snappy. If nothing, try a fresh plug. If still nothing, the ignition module may be failing with heat. Try blowing out sawdust from the engine and case with compressed air to improve cooling. Does the engine 4-stroke when not cutting, but immediately 2-strokes when cutting? Check the air cleaner and muffler for plugging. Make sure the carburetor fasteners are tight. Hope some of this helps!

Chainsaw quit cutting well, the bar gets half way down in a log and it quits cutting, the engine even starts to choke down

Remove the bar and chain--check the oil port in the side of the engine case where the bar fits up to. Start the engine--oil should ooze out of the port. If not, service the pump, lines and tank filter. If oil does ooze out, clean the chain groove, and the two oil passages that feed oil to the groove. If the outsides of the chain groove have flared out from chain wear, file these edges off (about 45 degrees) til they don't project beyond the bar vertical surface so that they don't catch on the kerf cut. Make sure the chain is being sharpened and adjusted properly. The 'choking down' may be from the engine overheating while trying make the cut. The engine should 4-stroke when running at speed, but immediately 2-stroke when cutting. Make sure the air cleaner and muffler are not plugged. Hope this helps!

Runs until I start cutting something, then turns off.

Remove the muffler and clean the spark arrestor screen. Check the top edge of the exhaust port in the cylinder for any carbon build-up. Scrape it clean if necessary (but don't scratch the piston or cylinder wall). Check the air cleaner for plugging. Turn both H and L mixture screws in the carburetor CW to their stops (lightly), the back out 1-1/2 turns each. Start the engine and warm it up, then open the throttle. Turn the H needle CW until the engine speeds up, but continues to '4-stroke' yet starts '2-stroking' immediately when you begin cutting. Release the throttle and adjust L for smoother idle, but still allows the engine to 'follow the throttle' when accelerated. Adjust idle speed to just stop the chain from turning. Make sure the chain is being oiled properly. Hope this helps!

Chain smoking while cutting, hard cutting, and pull string hard to pull new saw.

too much oil in the fuel, or set screws are not mixing air fuel properly. have the set screws looked at, and listen for a bearing to be gone, there are two un related issues here.
