SOURCE: My Hayward pool heater Model
A few things to check...
Is the pump working correctly, no air locks and moving the correct amount of water...is not correct that first, it could be causing the heater problem...
Is the heater over firing and/or not shutting down on proper temperature..???
The banging may be the heater producing steam instead of just heating the water...
At any rate is you are not comfortable with troubleshooting this you should get it look after right of way!!
This may be a dangerous situation...

This sounds like a low water flow situation. The heater is telling you that the high limit sensor is curring heater operation. The noises are the heat exchangers boiling the water either due to a blockage in the exchanger , a bad mixing vlve, or most likely poor water flow. This is tough to troubleshoot through a posting like this, but 1st thing is 1st. Check your water flow and make sure it is minimum 50 Gallons per minute.
