SOURCE: I don't have a manual for my Baby lock Pro line

You will have to order the manual from a Baby Lock dealer.

This model may have to be threaded in a certain order.

Try raising the presser foot and setting the tensions to zero.

Turn the handwheel so the upper looper (the curved one) is at it's highest position - there may be a mark on the side of the serger where you align the handwheel for this.

Thread the upper looper and then the lower looper and then the needles.

Pull the threads under the presser foot and toward the side of the serger.

Set the tensions back to 4 - 6, lower the presser foot.

Hold onto the thread tails and gently press the power pedal to begin a thread chain before serging fabric.

Hi! The motor pulley may be worn and cant turn properly causing the motor to be forced so much. The result will be an instant overheating that results to belt burn too. You will need to replace the motor, pulley and the belt now to make it running. Hope this helps and have a good one!

I was just given a Pro line model BL4-738D. It belonged to the mother of a friend of mine. Mother passed away, friend does not sew. It does have an instruction booklet I could copy and mail to you. This machine is 22 years old. Does that sound like it would work for you? email urquhart042@comcast.net

Sounds like the machine may be seizing. AVOID trying to run the machine while the motor is straining--it could damage the motor.

Why doesn't the needle go down?

1. If the machine motor is running you can see if the bobbin winder is functioning. If so then you need to tighten the hand wheel lock.
2. If it doesn't work try loosening the screw on the hand wheel lock. 3. Try to tighten the wheel lock now.
4. Now, tighten the screw.
5. If it still isn't functioning you may need to loosen the motor and replace the belt.
6. Belt. Remove old belt. Put new one on while motor is loose. Tighten the motor while you keep the machine running at a slow speed. As you tighten the motor there will be a point the motor speed rises the most. Tighten the motor there and recheck afterwards.

Baby lock bl4 736d serger slows down and stops

Your serger needs service. (clean, oil, adjust, etc.) It may be that the motor is not lubed well enough and as it is being run it heats up and expands which causes it to bog down and stop. I would take it in for service and "mention" this issue while you are there.

Baby lock serger motor slows down after sewing 20 minutes. Why?

Call your local service shop. Baby Locks in closets for years usually have this problem The manual recommends annual maintenance by a pro, and they will oil the internal lobes of the feed dog apparatus. It cannot be oiled from the outside, nor with covers off, but must be taken apart. If those lobes lose the oil and heat up you will feel "surging" then slowing repeatedly -- fast then slow then fast etc -- until the lobes over heat and sort of weld themselves to that small barrel looking case. So a Baby Lock can sew, then temporarily be sluggish then later slow till sluggish; and at worst, seem to be doing everything right BUT not advancing the cloth -- that's when the worst damage is done and professional repair is needed. In PA might cost $150 to fix. $70 in parts; $80 in labor (2012 prices)
Been there, done that.
