If you've got deep enough pockets you can send the drive off to a data recovery company who will run diagnostic tests in order to assess the damage that's been done and give you an estimate as to how many megabytes of data they can retrieve but this can be very costly. If you can't access the drive through the operating system because it can't be physically seen can you get to the drive through DOS? If you can you might be able to run some disk repair utilities such as Uneraser or Active@ but the general rule of thumb is as soon as a drive starts making noises such as excessive whirring or clicking it's normally a good indication that something untoward has happened to one or more of the internal components. Good luck.

The unit is defective. Your only chance of recovering the data is to dismantle the external case, extract the actual hard disk from it and put it in a desktop. If the disk is not recognized even there then the disk is dead and all the data on it is lost.

DVD recorders are usually not the first selection for backup of data files. you may be better off with a 1 Tbyte external drive, which is suited for that purpose. Even though the DVD drive has the capacity, there are usually formatting issues with data files being burned to a DVD recorder.

The theory to unformat a Mac hard disk is, when you format a Mac HFS+/HFSX Volume or format a external hard disk, the data are not really wiped. Format process just marked your Mac hard disk as available to reuse, no matter it is quick format or complete format. So if you put if you fill in a mount of new data to your hard drive, then the formatted data are overwritten, your will permanently lose your formatted data.
